Oaks Christian sophomore Eleanor Borchard — the daughter of former Stanford quarterback and Chicago White Sox outfielder Joe Borchard — qualifies for her first state finals in the girls 300-meter hurdles, finishing seventh in the Prelims in 43.27 seconds. The time is the No. 4-best time in area history.

It looks like the high jump competition is over for the day. Fahrogha was one of three jumpers successful at 5-3, 5-5 and 5-6 without a miss, so she’s moving on. Thousand Oaks’ Madison Thai is sitting 17th after jumping 5-5, but missing three times at 5-6. Top 12 advance, so it looks like she's going to come up short.

4 p.m. Prelude to a championship

More than 20 athletes and seven relay teams are at Veterans Memorial Stadium in Clovis tonight for the CIF State Track and Field Championships.

But before they compete for state titles on Saturday, most of them have to qualify today.

Among the contenders for state glory include Ventura sophomore Sadie Engelhardt, the defending champion and top seed in the girls 1,600 meters, and Oaks Christian junioor Niya Clayton, who won the girls 100-meter dash at last week's CIF-Southern Section Masters Meet at Moorpark High.

Ventura freshman Sadie Engelhardt uses a strong finishing kick to win the 1,600-meter title at the CIF State track and field championships on Saturday in Clovis.
