UTEP Miners kick off season against Jacksonville State Gamecocks

UTEP kicked off its 106th season of football with a Conference USA road opener against a team making its FBS debut, Jacksonville State. This is the second game of the 2023 college football season, as Notre Dame-Navy kicks off earlier with UTEP kicking off at 3:30 p.m. mountain time.

The Miners come in to the year loaded with expectations, with almost all of its offense and much of its defense returning from a 5-7 season. Jacksonville State, meanwhile, also has a lot back from a team that went 9-2 and topped the Atlantic Sun Conference last year.

UTEP head football coach Dana Dimel talk to his team after practice at the Glory Field on Thursday, Aug. 17, 2023, before their season opener at Jacksonville State on Saturday, Aug. 26.

UTEP is looking for a faster start this year, as it stumbled out of the gate in 2022, also in a Week 0 C-USA game, against North Texas.

The Miners figure to rely on tailback Deion Hankins and an offensive line that has 120 combined career starts, as it will look to play keep-away from a Jacksonville State team that is also centered around the run.
