Postgame recap: Jaguars defeat Dolphins in game called early due to Daewood Davis injury

The Jacksonville Jaguars wrapped up their 2023 preseason on Aug. 26 at the newly renamed EverBank Stadium, taking on the Miami Dolphins in an all-Florida NFL clash. The game was ended with 8:32 remaining due to an injury to Miami receiver Daewood Davis.

The game was also a matchup of two prized young quarterbacks, Trevor Lawrence for the Jaguars and Tua Tagovailoa for the Dolphins. Unlike last week's Jags game against the Detroit Lions, head coach Doug Pederson was expected to give starters some playing time as the team tunes up for the NFL regular season opener in two weeks, in spite of multiple injuries along the offensive and defensive lines.

Play paused for injury to Dolphins receiver Daewood Davis

Play is stopped with 8:32 remaining in the fourth quarter. Miami receiver Daewood Davis, a rookie out of Western Kentucky, is down and receiving medical treatment after he appeared to collide hard with two Jaguars -- one of them linebacker Dequan Jackson from Lee (Riverside) High School -- on a pass over the middle. Davis has yet to get up from the collision and players from both teams are looking on with concern.

Touchdown Dolphins: Chris Brooks scores his second TD

Chris Brooks is having a nice second half for the Dolphins, finding the end zone for the second time tonight. The Dolphins went for two and failed, leaving the Jags with a 13-point edge.

One quarter to go in preseason.

Touchdown Jaguars: JaMycal Hasty finishes off impressive drive

Nathan Rourke is into the game now at QB, and the receivers are continuing to stake their claim for roster spots. First it was Elijah Cooks grabbing a strike in traffic for a first down, then it was Seth Williams beating his corner with a superb move and making a diving catch. That set up JaMycal Hasty for an 8-yard TD run. Roster decisions for Doug Pederson and Trent Baalke aren't going to be easy this year.

Jaguars 31, Dolphins 12, 4:48 3rd.

Touchdown Dolphins: Chris Brooks into end zone for Miami

With the backups in the game for Jacksonville on defense, Miami makes it into the end zone, with help from a Jaguars penalty that extended the drive. Chris Brooks powered through the line and in.

Jaguars 24, Dolphins 12, 8:49 3rd.

Touchdown Jaguars: C.J. Beathard goes deep to Tim Jones to open half

It's a big play for the Jaguars: The Dolphins' coverage collapsed on that one, and C.J. Beathard found Tim Jones downfield for a 74-yard bomb. That play won't hurt Jones' chances of making the team, especially after a drop and a missed block in the first half.

Jaguars 24, Dolphins 6, 14:15 3rd.

HALFTIME: Jaguars 17, Dolphins 6

Time runs out on the Jaguars, who passed up the chance for a 59-yard field goal try for Brandon McManus. Now it's halftime at EverBank Stadium.

Field goal Dolphins: Miami drive stalls out, Jason Sanders converts

Miami moved the football up the field but the Jaguars stiffened inside the red zone. The Dolphins settled for a 28-yard field goal by Jason Sanders.

Jaguars 17, Dolphins 6, 0:37 2nd.

Touchdown Jaguars: D'Ernest Johnson runs in from 8 yards

A nice highlight from D'Ernest Johnson, who got perfect blocking on that play. He's into the end zone untouched from 8 yards up the middle.

Jaguars 17, Dolphins 3, 3:11 2nd.

Another pick: Yasir Abdullah intercepts for Jaguars

That's another takeaway for a Jags rookie. This one is a play that Skylar Thompson would like to have back, delivering a short pass directly to pass rusher Yasir Abdullah after he stepped in front of a Miami receiver. The Jaguars will take over at the Miami 20.

Field goal Jaguars: Brandon McManus extends the lead

The drive didn't end in the end zone, after C.J. Beathard got wrapped up for a sack on third down, but Brandon McManus entered to kick a 37-yard field goal.

Jaguars 10, Dolphins 3, 4:26 2nd.

C.J. Beathard is in for Jaguars: Trevor Lawrence heads to the sidelines

That'll do it for Trevor Lawrence and most of the Jaguars' first-teamers. C.J. Beathard is in at quarterback.

Interception! Rookie Erick Hallett II makes the pick for the Jags... depending on the review

Another takeaway from a young Jaguars DB. With Miami's offensive reserves in the ballgame, Dolphins QB Skylar Thompson rolled right and tried a high pass that glanced off the receiver's fingertips and into the hands of the Jaguars' Erick Hallett II. Officials originally ruled the catch out of bounds but reversed the call after Doug Pederson's challenge, and now the Jags will take over in Dolphin territory.

Touchdown Jaguars: Travis Etienne powers in from 3 yards

That's the kind of drive that Jags fans will be hoping to see in the regular season. Backed inside their own 20, the Jaguars marched upfield, with the key play coming on an excellent back-shoulder connection from Trevor Lawrence to Calvin Ridley inside the 5. That one held up after a Miami challenge, and from there, Travis Etienne made it look easy getting to the end zone.

Jaguars 7, Dolphins 3, 9:15 2nd.

Dolphins 3, Jaguars 0, 0:16 1st.

Fumble: Tank Bigsby loses the handle, Dolphins recover

The plan was to give the Jaguars' starters some snaps in the first half tonight, and that's definitely what happened on that drive. But it didn't end in the end zone: After a steady diet of Travis Etienne and Tank Bigsby carries, Bigsby fumbled a yard shy of the goal line and the Dolphins recover.

Things we learned (or maybe already knew): It's hard to convert second and 35

Second and 35: It just happened, thanks to a very wild Dolphins shotgun snap that bounced 25 yards deep into the backfield. Miami recovered but ended up in that horrendous down and distance. The Jaguars' offense goes to work next.
