The three-day Hoops for Harmony: Stand Against Racism basketball showcase is in York this weekend with a slew of boys' and girls' hoops games scheduled from Friday to Sunday.

The event features basketball teams from across central Pennsylvania but also the Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Hagerstown, Md., and Washington, D.C. areas.

Great time to hit milestone

Olivia Jones was glad she had a chance to hit 1,000 points in front of friends and family. Janay Rissmiller was hoping to reach that magic number on her birthday.

Things worked out well for both players.

Rissmiller, a York Suburban senior, had her work cut out for her Sunday. The guard needed 23 points against Obama Academy out of Pittsburgh to give herself a special 18th birthday present.

She hit a 3-pointer with less than a minute remaining in the first half to reach 25 points for the game. Rissmiller ended up outscoring the opposition as the Trojans won 64-18.

"I wasn't really focused on 1,000," she said, "but it was nice because it was my birthday. Winning the game was my main focus, and getting my teammates the ball."

Rissmiller could have had her 23 points even earlier in the game, but she opted for passing the ball to teammates so they could shoot.

Trojans coach Jess Weaver said that is a perfect example of the type of player -- and person -- Rissmiller is.

"She is definitely one of the most humble kids that I've ever coached," Weaver said. "I know she's always a team-first kid, but I think she was on a mission today to get it done."

Now that the milestone is behind her, and she has the banner to prove it, Rissmiller and her teammates can focus on the second half of the YAIAA Division II season. The Trojans, which have only lost to division-leading Northeastern, host West York on Monday night.

Rissmiller wasn't the first to celebrate the 1,000-point milestone at the weekend Hoops for Harmony showcase. That honor went to Jones.

The Cumberland County native, who scored 18 points in Cedar Cliff's win over Central York in last year's District 3 Class 6A final, doesn't often get to play in front of friends and family.

That's because the 5-10 junior guard left the Colts' program and transferred to Westtown, a private school in the Philadelphia area.

Even though she only needed three points, it wasn't until the second quarter that Jones hit her number. Foul trouble sent her to the bench midway through the first quarter.

"I wanted to get it out of the way so that I could just play the game," Jones said of Saturday's contest against Delone Catholic. "I know some people who were a little bit late got there just in time to see it, so God works in mysterious ways."

Jones finished with 16 points on Saturday.

Some staggering numbers

33 -- games played in three gyms at two sites (31 varsity and two J.V.).

45 -- varsity and J.V. teams that played.

99 -- officials needed.

605 -- total players on Hoops for Harmony rosters.

1,056 -- total minutes of basketball played.

Dallastown stuns Suburban in local rivalry game

High school basketball is wacky.

That was Dallastown head coach Mike Grassel’s best explanation for his team’s 60-52 win over York Suburban at the Hoops for Harmony showcase Saturday.

The Wildcats were the clear underdog against one of the hottest teams in the YAIAA. They trailed by 10 points midway through the third quarter. But they outscored the Trojans 25-12 in the fourth quarter.

“You’re dealing with teenage kids anything can happen,” Grassel said. “Luckily for us tonight our guys believed.”

Offensive leaders: Here are the YAIAA boys' and girls' basketball scoring leaders

Kobe McNealy led Dallastown with 26 points and nailed several key 3-pointers down the stretch. Chase McLane added 16 points (and four 3-pointers) for the Wildcats.

Brytaen Wiedman scored eight points but had perhaps the play of the game when he grabbed an offensive rebound off his missed free throw late in the fourth quarter. The possession ended in a Jalen Cook layup that gave Dallastown a four-point lead.

The performance was especially impressive considering Dallastown multi-sport star Michael Scott missed the game with a wrist injury.

Most impressively, Dallastown limited a York Suburban offense that has scored 70 points numerous times this season. Standout York Suburban point guard Nasir Barnes scored 21 points but was often swarmed by Wildcats down the stretch.

Dallastown improved to 7-5 while Suburban moved to 11-3.

“We just wanted to play defense and stop their shooters,” McNealy said. “I trust my teammates so it doesn’t matter who takes the shots. We all trust each other.”

Delone learns lessons in loss to national powerhouse

It was quite an experience

That was the best way Delone Catholic head coach Gerry Eckenrode could put it. But he was also being honest.

Delone Catholic suffered its first loss of the season Saturday with a 67-30 shellacking against Westtown, a prep school located in West Chester. The Squirettes trailed 21-3 after the first quarter and 45-7 at halftime.

But Westtown is a juggernaut that regularly blows out its opponents. It recently beat rival Friends Central 77-18.

“They’re just totally fantastic. They’re past our pay grade,” Eckenrode said. “We’ve got to work harder because there’s always somebody better than you are, but there are a lot of kids on that team who you’ll see on TV one day.”

Megan Jacoby led Delone with 10 points. Jessie Moses led Wesstown with 22.

Olivia Jones, who led Cedar Cliff to a District 3 Class 6A title and state title game appearance last season, scored 16 for Westtown and topped 1,000 career points in the contest.

Delone is now 12-1 and remains the top-ranked team in District 3 Class 4A.

“We played Neumann Goretti a few years ago, and they weren’t as good as that team,” Eckenrode said. “We can’t rest on our laurels. But we’re doing fine. We’re never going to play a team like them in districts or states. They have six or seven Division I players. It might hurt our pride, but it’s not going to hurt us.”
