Live updates: UCLA to face Oregon after topping OSU in Pac-12 Tournament

It will be No. 4 Oregon vs. No. 5 UCLA in the quarterfinals of the Pac-12 men’s basketball tournament.

And if his performance against Oregon State is any indication, the Ducks will need to have a answer for Dylan Andrews.

The sophomore guard had a career game against the Beavers in a 67-57 victory for the Bruins in the first round of the Pac-12 Tournament inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Andrews had 31 points on 11-of-15 shooting overall and 7-of-9 from 3-point range, which were career highs for points, made field goals and made 3-pointers.

With the win, the Bruins (16-16) advance to play the Ducks at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

Oregon and UCLA split their series this season, with the Ducks winning 64-59 at home in December and the Bruins winning 71-63 in Los Angeles in February.

The victory also put UCLA one step closer to playing in its third straight Pac-12 championship game and a redemptive finish for a Bruins’ squad that has struggled for much of the season.

“Obviously, Dylan was unbelievable tonight,” UCLA coach Mick Cronin said. “I tell these guys all the time if you just play as hard as you can and work as hard as you can, the results eventually come, if you have talent.”

Season ends for Oregon State

The rebuilding Beavers (13-19), who have been rebuilding the last couple of seasons after winning the Pac-12 Tournament title in 2021, didn’t have nearly enough answers on offense to advance.

Jordan Pope scored 16, Dexter Akanno had 14 points and Tyler Bilodeau scored 13 as Oregon State lost for the 12th time in its last 14 games, but the seven other Beavers who played combined to score 14 as they lost their first game in Las Vegas for the third straight season.

“Tough finish,” coach Wayne Tinkle said. “It’s been a real grind, but I'm really proud of our group for all that they've endured in the process of rebuilding things for us at Oregon State. We talked about the days of us 'just being competitive' are now behind us, after year two of our rebuild.”

The Beavers looked lost in the first half against the Bruins. They trailed 34-22 at halftime and made just five field goals in the last 14:20.

After trailing by 15 early in the second half, Oregon State made one last attempt to get back in the game, as back-to-back 3-pointers by Akanno and Pope cut the Beavers' deficit to four points — 46-42 — with 9:46 to play.

But Andrews scored 11 with three 3-pointers in the final 9:30 for the Bruins as their lead went into double-digits.

“We gave ourselves chances in the second half, after a very poor offensive performance in the first half, and we're just a play or two away from that thing going down to the wire,” Tinkle said. “Credit UCLA, (it’s) one of the best defensive teams in the league for a reason. And then the Andrews kid throwing some real daggers at us throughout the game, but especially down the stretch.”
