8:05 p.m.: Greater Akron/Canton owns 285 pounds as well in the OHSAA state wrestling champions
Add another two titles for the area in Division I's Aidan Fockler and Division II's Aidan Mozden.
Mozden, who was a third-place finisher last season, left no doubt against Hawken's Will Greenberg.
It came in a pin of 5:08.
Fockler successfully defended his title and left little doubt as well.
For the second week in a row the Central Michigan signee beat Riverside's Antonio Bottiggi.
This time, it came in an 8-2 win to make Fockler a four-time state placer and three-time state finalist.
7:38 p.m.: Greater Akron/Canton owns 190 pounds in the OHSAA state wrestling championships
Two area wrestlers came in with championship dreams and saw those dreams fulfilled.
In Division III, Garrettsville Garfield's Keegan Sell became the school's first two-time state champion.
And he did it in style with an escape, takedown and near fall all in the final 11 seconds to break a 6-6 tie and top Xander Myers of Liberty Center, 11-6, in their 190-pound title match.
In a battle of 2023 state champs, Sell led the entire way, building up his lead with a takedown in the first (2-0), a reversal in the second (4-1) and a takedown in the third (6-3).
Myers tied the score late, but Sell, with 11 seconds left and starting in the bottom position, executed a slick flip to get out of Myers' grasp for the victory.
Buckeye's Eddie Neitenbach, who pinned his way to the finals, added a title in Division II.
It came against Columbus St. Francis DeSales' Lincoln Shulaw.
Like Sell, it was over early and ended with the Wyoming commit scoring a 17-8 major decision win.
7:23 p.m.: Woodridge's Steven Duffy finishes second in OHSAA Division II at 175 pounds
Steven Duffy tipped his hat after his Division II 175-pound state title match.
The Woodridge senior ran into defending state champion Gunner Cramblet of St. Paris Graham in the final. Crambett used a tilt to get the pin in 55 seconds, handing Duffy just his second loss of the season.
7:19 p.m. Perry's Landen Johnson just misses OHSAA Division I state title at 165 pounds
Johnson was able to pick up an escape with 33 seconds left against now two-time state champion Ethan Birden, but couldn't close things out.
Birden walks out a three-time finalist and two-time state champ.
7:00 p.m.: Buckeye's Kaden King win in overtime to repeat as state champion at 157
It took overtime, but Buckeye is 3-0 in state title matches.
Buckeye 157-pounder Kaden King was in a dogfight with Clyde's Lance Overmyer with the match tied 1-1 after regulation. In the sudden victory period, King shot on Overmyer and got the winning takedown with a second to spare. The 3-1 gave King his second straight state title.
6:54 p.m. Three-peat! Wadsworth’s Jaxon Joy wins OHSAA state wrestling title, ties state record
Joy joined 2012 graduate Nick Tavanello as the only three-time state champion for the Grizzlies.
The 150-pound king is also the first four-time state finalist at the school. Oh, and he tied a Division I state record for career wins (189, Gio DiSabato, Hilliard Davidson).
It came with a 15-7 major decision win over Cincinnati Moeller’s Londen Murphy.
6:50 p.m.: Three-peat! Manchester's Jaydyn McKinney pins her way to 135-pound girls state title.
"The Villian" has done it.
Manchester's Jaydyn McKinney scored her fourth straight first-period pin to claim the OHSAA 135-pound girls title for the second straight year.
Facing fellow returning state champion Kira Cole of Miami East, McKinney hit her side headlock, through a leg over and got the pin in 1:19.
Combined with her OWCA state title her sophomore year, McKinney becomes a three-time state champion.
6:24 p.m. Perry's Charles Curtis sees an impressive streak come to an end at 138-pound OHSAA state final
A win streak that began at the Ironman finally came to an end when returning runner-up Kade Brown beat Curtis 10-3.
The two-time state placer finished his senior season an impressive 39-3 and walked away a two-time state placer.
6:14 p.m.: Brecksville's Anna Madi finishes state runner-up in girls 120 pound class
Brecksville's Anna Madi was unable to get her offense going against Chippewa's Kayla Moroschan in the girls 120-pound final. Moroschan won 5-0.
5:50 p.m.: Buckeye's Colyn Limbert repeats as Division II 120-pound state champion
Buckeye is 2-for-2 in Division II state title matches.
Defending state champion Colyn Limbert picked up his second straight title, winning a tight 3-1 decision over Galion's Gradey Hardin. Limbert got the match's lone takedown in the first period.
Buckeye cuts St. Paris Graham's lead to 121.5-116. The Bucks have two more state finalists tonight, but Graham has four.
5:34 p.m.: Buckeye's Blake Bartos pins his way to Division II 113-pound title
Blake Bartos started Buckeye's final session in emphatic fashion.
Bartos, the first of four Bucks to compete for titles tonight, pinned Carrolton's Kail Snair in 1:19 to win the Division I 113-pound state title.
5:30 p.m.: Highland's Brandon Bickerton wins Division I 106-pound state title
Here's the flying squirrel that won Brandon Bickerton the Division I state title at 106.
JUST WOW!!!@HornetWrestling @HornetAthletic @beaconjournal https://t.co/gNKaRJEIVj— Brad Bournival (@bbournival) March 10, 2024
Highland's Brandon Bickerton had a flare for the dramatic in his rematch with Perrysburg's Ayden Dodd. The two met in the Perrysburg Invitational and Bickerton came out with the win.
This time Bickerton hit a flying squirrel at the buzzer to score a takedown to win 6-5. I
For those that don't know what that is Bickerton jumped over Dodd and grabbed him on the way back down to hit the Hail Mary two to come from behind to win.
WOW!
