Live updates: Colorado State football team hosts Boise State

Is the 13th time the charm?

The Colorado State football team has played Boise State 12 times with the Broncos winning all 12. The Rams are the only Mountain West team to never beat Boise State.

The teams meet again at 7:45 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 14 at Canvas Stadium for CSU's homecoming.

Follow along here for notes pregame and live updates throughout Saturday's game.

Inside the game-winning play

Colorado State practices the Hail Mary every week. Here's the plan and how it played out:

Inside the Hail Mary: How Colorado State football stunned Boise State

Colorado State wins!

The Colorado State football team beat Boise State 31-30 late Saturday night with the game-winning touchdown a 33-yard Hail Mary on the final play of the game.

More: Colorado State football stuns Boise State with Hail Mary win on final play

The deep ball pass from Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi was batted down by two Boise State defenders and CSU’s Dallin Holker scooped the ball into his arms before it hit the ground.

The play went to a long, long review before it stood as called.

That wasn’t the end, though. It tied it 30-30 with no time on the clock and Jordan Noyes had to hit the extra point after an unsportsmanlike penalty.

That made it a 35-yard extra point. Jordan Noyes nailed it.

CSU ball, one final hope

Boise State punts. CSU, no timeouts, gets the ball at its own 12 with 33 seconds left.

CSU recovers another onside, but penalty

Wow. Insanity. CSU recovers another onside kick but refs call an illegal block before the ball goes 10 yards. It's a re-kick.

Boise State recovers the second attempt, fittingly Ashton Jeanty.

Colorado State touchdown

Rams score after recovering the onsides kick.

Dylan Goffney with a 2-yard TD reception. It's 30-23 Boise State with 1:53 to go. CSU has two timeouts remaining.

CSU recovers onside kick

Game still on?

CSU recovers the onside kick all the way down at Boise State's 38. A quick score here and it gets interesting.

Colorado State touchdown

Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi hits Louis Brown for a 12-yard TD.

Boise State lead is 30-17 with 4:01 to go.

Boise State touchdown

First play after Boise State goes up 13 Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi throws a bad interception.

Boise State returns it to CSU's 8.

Two plays later Ashton Jeanty with a 7-yard TD. That's game over.

It's 30-10 Boise State with 6:12 to go.

Boise State adds a field goal

Jonah Dalmas hits a 29-yard field goal.

Still a two-score game, but now it's two touchdowns. Boise State up 23-10 with 7:06 to go.

CSU turnover on downs

CSU gets to Boise State's 49 but turns it over on downs. Refs called grounding on an incomplete fourth-down pass, so Boise State gets the ball at CSU's 44.

Rams need to hold Boise State to a maximum of a field goal here to keep it a two-score game.

Big homecoming crowd

CSU announced a crowd of 34,901 for homecoming, the fifth-largest in Canvas Stadium history.

A lot left after an ugly first half, but it was a big one initially.

Boise State adds a field goal

Boise State makes it a two-score game once again as Jonah Dalmas hits a 43-yard field goal to open the fourth quarter.

It's 20-10 with 14:56 to go in the game. A nine-play, 54-yard drive for Boise State.

End third quarter

Boise State 17, CSU 10

Rams outscore Broncos 10-0 in third, but Boise State will start fourth with an FG attempt.

Colorado State scores again

Rams are pushing back. A 40-yard pass play to Dylan Goffney gets CSU in scoring range at the Boise State 35.

CSU stalls out there but Jordan Noyes hits a 48-yard field goal. It's a career-long for the kicker from England.

Boise State's lead is now 17-10 with 4:07 left in the third quarter.

Update on CSU's Kennedy McDowell

An update from CSU on injured defensive lineman Kennedy McDowell:

"Defensive lineman Kennedy McDowell is responsive and has movement in his extremities.

He is being transferred to UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins for further evaluation."

Colorado State touchdown

This game is getting chippy. Dawson Menegatti is hit late and CSU offensive lineman react in anger. Rams get three unsportsmanlike penalties on the play, Boise State gets one. Penalties offset.

Not long after Vann Schield runs in for a 5-yard TD run. It's 17-7 Boise State with 9:58 left in third quarter.

It was a 10-play, 56-yard drive for CSU to get back in it.

CSU player injured

CSU's Kennedy McDowell is hurt on the opening kickoff on a blindside block by Boise State. He is down for a long time and carted off.

Very scary situation. Hope it turns out OK.

CSU field goal blocked

Rams finally get a bit of a drive and get down inside Boise State's 30 late in the first half, but Rams stall out and a 45-yard field goal attempt from Jordan Noyes at the buzzer is blocked.

That kind of half for CSU. Boise State leads 17-0.

Yardage is 252-71 for the Broncos.

Boise State field goal

Boise State's Jonah Dalmas is one of the best college kickers you'll find.

He hits a 49-yard field goal to give the Broncos a 17-0 lead with 2:45 until halftime.

Boise State has 252 yards of offense to 26 for CSU.

CSU forces another turnover

Maddux Madsen overshoots his receiver and Chigi Anusiem picks it off. That's the third turnover forced by CSU.

Rams ball at own 23, down 14-0.

Two big CSU drops

Wow, when it rains, it pours.

On fifth drive of the game CSU finally gets a first down. Then a great play call gets Tory Horton wide open deep and Brayden Fowler-Nicolosi hits him in stride and he simply drops it. It would have/should have been a 65-yard TD. That could have changed the game.

Then on 3rd and 4 Dallin Holker drops a potential first-down catch.

That kind of night so far for CSU.

Boise State touchdown

Ashton Jeanty is running wild. He cruises in from 3 yards out for his second TD of the game.

Boise State is up 14-0 with 11:03 until half.

Jeanty has 15 rushes for 138 yards and two TDs at this point. The only thing brining down his 9.2 yard-per-carry average are two short TD runs.

End first quarter

Boise State 7, CSU 0

CSU's defense has forced two turnovers, but the offense has 11 yards total on four drives (all three-and-outs). CSU is disjointed right now.

Some boos for the offense

CSU goes 3-and-out for a fourth time in a row. This one was three-straight Vann Schield runs and a punt. Rams have 11 total yards on four drives.

Fans boo after third-down call.

Colorado State interception

Give the CSU defense this, the Rams can take the ball away.

Taylen Green with a fairly deep pass and Jack Howell gets back in coverage, tips it up and Henry Blackburn snags it for the pick.

Back-to-back Boise State drives ends in a turnover. CSU ball at own 29 with 3:14 left in first quarter.

Colorado State forces fumble

CSU went 3-and-out on its second drive but on first play of Boise State's second drive the Rams force a fumble on a short pass. Justin Sanchez knocks it out and Buom Jock falls on it.

CSU ball at own 47 but Rams do nothing with it and go 3-and-out for third time in a row.

Paddy Turner pins Boise State at its own 3.

Boise State scores first

Shortly after Wilson's ejection, Boise State's Ashton Jeanty runs in for a 3-yard score. Boise State takes a 7-0 lead with 9:03 left in the first quarter.

It was an efficient 8-play, 68-yard drive in 3:56. Jeanty had 45 rush yards on the drive.

Chase Wilson ejected

CSU linebacker Chase Wilson was ejected on the first drive of the game for Boise State.

Boise State QB Maddux Madsen took off on a designed run and was hit hard by Wilson. There was no flag initially but it went to review and he was handed a 15-yard penalty and ejected for targeting.

Game to start on FS2

The Kansas State-Texas Tech game is running long, so Boise State and CSU will begin on FS2. It will switch to FS1 once the other game ends.

CSU to receive opening kick

Rams get the ball first to open the game.

CSU with several key injuries

First up, the good news for CSU: Stars Tory Horton and Mohamed Kamara are playing after leaving last week's game injured.

Now, the bad news:

  • Running back Kobe Johnson is out injured

  • Running back Avery Morrow is still out injured

  • Running back Damian Henderson is still out injured

  • Nickelback Ayden Hector is out injured

Running backs will likely be Vann Schield and KJ Edwards. Tight end/fullback Peter Montini might get in the action as well.

Dominic Morris will likely start at nickelback.

CSU football uniforms

As usual, CSU is in the traditional look with the green uniforms, gold pants and traditional horn helmet.

Men's basketball scrimmage highlights

Before the football game starts, here's a look at some highlights from the CSU men's basketball intrasquad scrimmage.

Some thoughts:

  • Nique Clifford could be a real playmaker in this system.

  • Joel Scott adds some interior strength.

  • A healthy Josiah Strong will be a big asset.

  • Isaiah Stevens is in for a dominant season.

Colorado State's torrid history vs. Boise State

As noted above, CSU is 0-12 all-time vs. Boise State.

It's been a wild mix of blowout losses, a few close games and one potentially program-altering meltdown.

The first meeting was a 63-13 route by Boise State in 2011. The Rams lost by 12 and 13 in 2013 and 2014 to at least be pseudo competitive.

There was a 28-23 loss in 2016. Then came the backbreaker.

In 2017, CSU led Boise State 28-3 in the second quarter before a complete collapse. The Rams ended up losing 59-52 in overtime. It wasn't clear then, but it started a downward spiral that ultimately ended Mike Bobo's tenure years later. That was a turning point.

What's up with the CSU football defense?

CSU's defense is one of the best in the country at sacking the opposing QB, creating tackles for loss and forcing turnovers.

But, check out these numbers that run counter to the positives above:

  • 478.4 yards allowed per game is 128th (out of 130) in FBS.

  • 36 points per game is 125th in FBS.

  • CSU has allowed five touchdowns of 45 yards or more (including four in the last three games) and 10 touchdowns of 20 yards or more.

  • 12 of the 21 touchdowns allowed by the CSU defense have been 18-yard plays or longer. Utah State had three touchdowns of 48 yards or longer (with a long of 76) last week.

  • CSU has allowed 16 rushes of 15 yards or more and 26 passes of 20 yards or more.

Is it fixable? Here's a look at what the team is saying about the defense:
