Purdue football vs. Iowa recap: Boilermakers lose to Hawkeyes 20-14, drop to 2-4

Ryan Walters earned his first win at Ross-Ade Stadium last week, but now it's time for the Purdue football team to try to do it again on the road in Iowa.

The Boilermakers are 2-3 (1-1 Big Ten) and travel to Iowa City today to take on the Hawkeyes (4-1, 1-1 Big Ten). Both teams are coming off victories last week.

Iowa, however, lost starting quarterback Cade McNamara to a season-ending knee injury. Deacon Hill will take over.

Final: Iowa 20, Purdue 14

Purdue had a chance late in the game, but the offense went 4 and out. Hudson Card threw for 247 yards (25 for 40) with 1 touchdown and 2 interceptions. Devin Mockobee ran for 89 yards on 20 carries and a score. TJ Sheffield caught 6 passes for 93 yards and a touchdown.

On defense, Sanoussi Kane had 9 total tackles. Dillon Thieneman had 8 total tackles and an interception.

This one isn't over just yet. Purdue running back Devin Mockobee ran in a 2-yard score to put the Boilermakers right back in this. On the previous drive, Iowa missed a 44-yard field goal.

Deacon Hill found Erick All for a 22-yard touchdown pass. The drive went 6 plays and 46 yards. Purdue needs points. And quickly.

Purdue punted on its only possession of the second half so far. Iowa then drove down the field and Drew Stevens topped the drive off with a 23-yard field goal. It lasted 9 plays and 75 yards.

:32 left 2Q: Purdue's TJ Sheffield gets Boilermakers on the board

Purdue turned the tide late in the first half. After the Boilermaker defense blocked a 49-yard field attempt from Iowa, Purdue took over at its own 31-yard line.

Purdue moved the ball fairly well and got two first downs. Then Hudson Card completed a 43-yard touchdown pass to TJ Sheffield to get the Boilermakers back into this one before halftime.

The Hawkeyes started at the Purdue 5-yard line, but a high snap over the Iowa QB's head moved them back a little. Drew Stevens ended up hitting a 27-yard field goal to extend the lead.

On their own 38-yard line, Purdue quarterback Hudson Card missed a receiver and instead found an Iowa defensive back. The ball was returned to the Boilermaker 5.

After the interception, Purdue took over at the Iowa 35. The ball got moved up even more when the Hawkeyes were called pass interference. The Boilermakers had 1st and 10 on the 20-yard line but couldn't get any points out of it. An intentional grounding penalty by Hudson Card moved the ball back to the 24. Kicker Julio Macias then missed a 41-yard attempt.

Dillon Thieneman picked off a pass, which marked his third interception of the season. Purdue is in Iowa territory.

Purdue's first drive ended in a punt. The next possession, Iowa only needed two plays to get in the end zone. First, quarterback Deacon Hill completed a 13-yard pass to Kaleb Johnson. Second, Johnson broke free for a 67-yard touchdown run. He was untouched the whole way.
