RECAP: Results from Saturday's events at the Iowa high school state track championships

The 2023 Iowa high school state track meet is in the books.

It was a wild three days that gave us new state records, first-time champions and repeat champs too. Check out all the highlights and results from Saturday's action on the Blue Oval below.

5:01 p.m. — Record attendance at the 2023 meet

4:50 p.m. — Here are your 2023 Iowa high school track-and-field champions

  • 4A boys: Johnston scored 84 points to win their first state title in program history. Ankeny finished second with 80 points.

  • 3A boys: Pella won the title with 73 points. Western Dubuque finished second with 63 points.

  • 2A boys: Mediapolis and Williamsburg split the title with 62 points apiece. Des Moines Christian finished third with 58 points.

  • 1A boys: Lisbon won the title with 60 points. Columbus Junction finished second with 52 points.

  • 4A girls: Waukee Northwest won the title with 74 points. Ames finished second with 69 points.

  • 3A girls: Solon won the title with 79 points. ADM finished second with 62 points.

  • 2A girls: Van Meter won the title with 71 points. Mid-Prairie finished second with 49 points.

  • 1A girls: Calamus-Wheatland won the title with 38 points. Nashua-Plainfield finished second with 33 points.

4:45 p.m. — Here are your 4x400 boys winners

South Hamilton won the 1A race in 3:22.29. Durant won the 2A race in 3:22.51. Mount Vernon won the 3A race in 3:18.47, which was the fastest time in Iowa this season. Johnston won the 4A race in 3:15.26.

4:18 p.m. — Here are your 4x400 girls winners

Riverside won the 1A race in 4:03.07. Eddyville-Blakesburg won the 2A race in 3:56.70. Dubuque Wahlert won the 3A race in 3:58.56. Ames won the 4A race in 3:49.29, which was the best in Iowa this season and a top-35 U.S. high school time this season.

4:01 p.m. — Here are your 4x100 boys winners

Lisbon won the 1A race with a state-record time of 42.10. Williamsburg won the 2A race in 42.70. Harlan set a state record in the 3A race with a time of 42.13. Iowa City West won the 4A race with a time of 41.89 seconds.

3:37 p.m. — Here are your 4x100 girls winners

Dowling Catholic won the 4A race in 48.01, which was the fastest time in Iowa this season. Des Moines Hoover won the 3A race in 48.28. Denver won the 2A race in 49.80. Lisbon won the 1A race in 50.11.

3:18 p.m. — Here are your girls 1500 winners

West Des Moines Valley's Addison Dorenkamp wins the 4A race in 4:31.57, which is a top-15 U.S. high school time this season. Ballard's Paityn Noe continued her impressive meet with a win in the 3A race, which set a state record and marked a top-10 U.S. high school time this season (4:28.8). Sibley-Ocheyedan's Madison Brouwer won the 2A race in 4:36.75. Calamus-Wheatland's Noelle Steines won the 1A race in 4:35.43.

2:50 p.m. — Dowling Catholic's Jackson Heidesch dominates again

The Maroons senior won the 4A boys 1600 in 4:07.18, toppling City High's Ford Washburn (4:08.27) and Ankeny's Ethan Zuber (4:14.39). Pella's Chase Lauman added another title in the 3A race (4:16.90). Des Moines Christian's Collin Houg won the 2A race in 4:19.07. Woodbine's Landon Bendgen won the 1A race in 4:18.92.

2:33 p.m. — Miles Thompson does it again

The Cedar Rapids Washington speedster grabbed the 4A boys 200-meter dash title in 21.02 seconds, which finished as a top-35 high school time this season. Thompson has put on a show this week as one of Iowa's top high school sprinters in recent memory.

Harlan's Will Neuharth won the 3A race in 21.53 seconds. Williamsburg's Owen Douglas took the 2A title in 22.17 seconds. ACGC's Austin Kunkle took the 1A race in 21.69 seconds.

2:18 p.m. — Jessica Kyne grabs another title

After winning the 3A girls 100-meter dash to kick off Saturday, the Des Moines Hoover standout added a win in the 3A girls 200-meter dash with a winning time of 25.06 seconds. Kyne finished second in the prelims but got the best of ADM's Makayla Crannell in the championship sprint.

In 4A, Sioux City East's Elliana Harris won the girls 200 in 24.6 seconds over Southeast Polk's Alexis Boord. Panorama's Jaidyn Sellers added another victory in the 2A race with a time of 24.98 seconds. Murray's Aleksys Gannon won the 1A race in 25.29 seconds.

1:48 p.m. — Linn-Mar's Nicholas Gorsich wins the 4A boys 110 hurdles

The Linn-Mar senior brought home the 4A boys 110 hurdles title in 14.54 seconds, good enough to topple Fort Dodge's Connor Carver (14.64) and City High's Matt Schaeckenbach (14.68).

Elsewhere, Cedar Rapids Xavier's Grayson Hartman won the 3A race in 14.16 seconds. Iowa Falls' Jaden Damiano won the 2A race in 14.20 seconds. Columbus Junction's Triston Miller set a state record in the 1A race with a winning time of 14.35 seconds.

1:32 p.m. — Ali Frandsen shines again with state record in the 4A girls 100 hurdles

The Ames standout and Iowa commit delivered a state-record and PR time in the 4A girls 100 hurdles, winning with a time of 14.10 seconds over Urbandale's Esaba Okwaramoi and Wesrt Des Moines Valley's Emma Havighurst.

Elsewhere, Spencer's Jerra Merchant won with a state record in the 3A race (14.39). Treynor's Clara Teigland won the 2A race in 14.92 seconds. East Mills' Emily Williams won the 1A race in 15.17 seconds.

1:14 p.m. — Miles Thompson shows his speed in the 4A boys 100

The Cedar Rapids Washington speedster cruised to a win in the 4A boys 100, winning with a time of 10.46 seconds. Thompson had to hold off PRs from Southeast Polk's Abu Sama and Urbandale's Ryan Marshall.

Elsewhere, Harlan's Will Neuharth set a state record in the 3A race with a time of 10.68 seconds, beating out West Burlington/Notre Dame's Jack Riley and Marion's Alex Mota.

Northeast's Talib Bird won the 2A race in 10.81 seconds. ACGC's Austin Kunkie set a state record in the 1A race with a time of 10.52 seconds.

1:03 p.m. — Des Moines area dominates the girls 100s

First, it was Des Moines Hoover's Jessica Kyne winning the 3A race 12.25 seconds. Then came Dowling Catholic's Olivia Kramer, who ran the second fastest time in Iowa this season for a win in the 4A race (12.12 seconds). However, it was Panorama's Jaidyn Sellers who set a state record in the 2A race with a time of 12.06 seconds. Newell-Fonda's Mia Walker won the 1A race in 12.41 seconds.

12:58 p.m. — Jayden Stafford bounces back in the boys 100 wheelchair race

After crashing Friday, the Mid-Prairie sophomore bounced back with a win in the boys 100 (17.56). Dubuque Hempstead's Ally Darter won the girls 100 in 23.29.

12:20 p.m. — Iowa City West picks up another relay win

The Trojans' quartet of Aidan Jacobsen, Quinn Abbott, Jesus Marungo-Murillo and Christian Janis delivered a winning time of 58.19 to hold off runner-up Linn-Mar (58,52) and third-place Cedar Rapids Kennedy (58.72). Impressive considering Iowa City West finished behind both of those schools in the prelims.

Elsewhere, Spirit Lake set a state record in the 3A race with a time of 58.81. PCM won the 2A race in 1:00.46, barely holding off OABCIG by .02 seconds. Lisbon set a state record in the 1A race with a winning time of 59.89.

11:58 a.m. — Dowling Catholic wins the 4A girls shuttle hurdle

The quartet of Olivia Kramer, Alex Gaskell, Reese Ervin and Ruby Leman produced a winning time of 1:01.34 to hold off Ames (1:02.98) and Waukee Northwest (1:03.24). Dowling Catholic held true up top after having the best prelim time and the best regular-season time.

In 3A, Newton held off Solon and CCA for the win in 1:04.79. Sioux Central set a state record in the 2A race with a winning time of 1:04.67. Stanton won the 1A race in 1:07.26.

11:33 a.m. — Gabe Nash wins the 4A boys 800 title

The fastest time in Iowa and a top-60 high school time overall this season belonged to Sioux City North's Gabe Nash, who won the 4A boys 800 race in 1:52.34. A pair of Iowa City challengers were right behind him — City High's Truman Thompson (1:53.30) and Iowa City West's Moustafa Tiea (1:53.63) — but Nash held them off to clinch the title.

In 3A, Chase Lauman bolstered Pella's title chances with a state-record win in the 800. His time of 1:52.61 signaled a top-70 high school mark this season. Mediapolis' Logan Roass won the 2A race in 1:56.18. St. Edmond's Aaron Lursen won the 1A race in 1:56.64.

11:08 a.m. — Dubuque Hempstead's Keelee Leitzen leads the way in the girls 800s

The third-best time in Iowa this season won Keelee Leitzen the 4A girls 800. Her time of 2:11.46 was also a top-80 high school time this season. Elsewhere, Solon's Gracie Federspiel won the 3A girls 800 (2:12.97). Sibley-Ocheyedan's Madison Brouwer won the 2A race in 2:13.67, while Nashua-Plainfield's Kadence Huck won the 1A race in 2:11.75.

10:47 a.m. — Johnston shines in the 4A boys SMR

The quartet of Tatum Fox, Owen Ellsworth, Kaia Fox and Jashua Anglo put on quite a performance Saturday morning, setting a new state record in the 4A boys SMR with a time of 1:30.92. The Dragons needed every bit of it with runner-up Ankeny right behind them (1:30.78).

Amazingly, this is Johnston's first boys win of the meet and could be the catalyst for a Dragons state title.

10:27 a.m. — Shenandoah, Western Dubuque win boys SMR titles

1:32.99 for Shenandoah to beat Red Oak and Williamsburg in 2A. 1:32:31 for Western Dubuque over Central DeWitt and Carlisle in 3A.

10:03 a.m. — Three state records set in the 1A boys SMR

The top three teams all set state records in the 1A boys SMR, with Lawton-Bronson finishing first (1:31.12), Mount Ayr finishing second (1:31.40) and Lynville-Sully finishing third (1:33.28).

9:50 a.m. — Cedar Rapids Kennedy wins the 4A girls SMR

Quren Hullon, Morgan Hospodarsky, Addison Swartzendruber and Sidney Swartzendruber won in 1:46.27 over Waukee and Johnston. A dramatic photo finish at the end. Dubuque Wahlert won the 3A girls SMR title.

9:25 a.m. — Van Meter kicks off the day with a SMR title

Bulldogs win the 2A girls crown to kick the day off. Lawton-Bronson takes the 1A title.
