After starting their work day with a New York subway ride, Brewers pitchers finish with a win

NEW YORK – The Milwaukee Brewers pitching staff morphed into true New Yorkers this week at Citi Field, putting in a full day’s worth of work, then, as tired as they may have been from doing so, headed back out and did it again the next day.

Many of them even rode the subway to work, too.

Lifted by a cavalcade of arms who began their day Thursday by hopping off a team bus that was gridlocked in Manhattan traffic, the Brewers picked up a series win over the New York Mets with a 3-2 victory.

Devin Wiliams, pitching for the fourth time in five days, picked up the save in dicey fashion. With the bases loaded and two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Williams did what he does best, making critical pitches to strike out Starling Marte and give the Brewers three wins in the four-game set.

Box score: Brewers 3, Mets 2

First on the mound for the Brewers was Adrian Houser, one of Milwaukee’s subway seven, who in a fret over getting to the ballpark in time while in the thick of standstill traffic caused by President Joe Biden’s visit to New York City exited the bus in the middle of the road and navigated the Blue and Purple lines to Flushing.

Back-to-back home runs off Houser from Brett Baty and Brandon Nimmo in the top of the third staked the Mets to a 2-0 lead.

But Houser settled in from there, allowing three singles the rest of the way to turn in a quality start with 6 two-run innings in his first start since June 9.

In the sixth, the Brewers offense finally broke through against Mets starter Max Scherzer. After Milwaukee stranded six runners through the first five innings, Victor Caratini blasted a two-run homer to right-center to tie the game at 2-2.

When the Brewers loaded the bases with one out in the seventh against reliever T.J. McFarland, Brian Anderson, who also caught the subway, narrowly missed a go-ahead grand slam with a sacrifice fly to the warning track in right-center.

Nonetheless, it gave the Brewers a lead the bullpen wouldn’t relinquish.

Hoby Milner, who spearheaded the charge to take the train, took over in the seventh, pitching for the fifth time in six days. A ground ball that should have been an inning-ending double play was booted by Anderson at third, and then Milner hit Nimmo with a two-strike pitch to load the bases.

Counsell summoned another pitcher throwing for the fifth time in six days, Elvis Peguero.

He needed just three pitches, the last of which was a burrowing sinker that Marte pounded into the ground to Brice Turang at second base for a double play.

Then came Joel Payamps, another fellow public transit consumer, who had thrown three innings in the previous four days but responded with a scoreless eighth that included him winning a nine-pitch battle with Mets slugger Pete Alonso.

Once Williams completed his tightrope act in the ninth, the Brewers had earned themselves a happy flight.

A lot of their arms earned themselves a pack of ice on the shoulder and a beer just as cold, too.
