TALLAHASSEE ― The Cardinal Mooney Catholic High football team won its second state title in program history and first since 1972 with a 31-27 victory over Trinity Catholic on Friday in the Class 1 Suburban state football final at Ken Riley Field at Bragg Memorial Stadium on the campus of Florida A&M University.

Chris McCorlle caught a 39-yard touchdown pass from Michael Valentino and then McCorkle made an interception in the opposite end zone on the final play of the game to ice the victory.

The Cougars finished the season 12-2.

Two Sarasota County teams have earned the right to play for Florida high school football's ultimate prize.

Cardinal Mooney goes first, facing Trinity Catholic Friday at 10 a.m. for the Class 1S title. A win would give the Cougars their second start title, having won the first in 1972.

Saving the best for last, a rematch of last season's Class 4S state title game between Venice and Lakeland. They will play the last game of the nine championships at 8 p.m. Saturday. The Dreadnaughts won last year's matchup 21-14 so the Indians will have a chance to avenge that defeat.
