Lisbon Boys clinch title share, Lady Knights, Bulldogs win

Oct. 11—Lisbon officially became the title town of 2023 NAC West Soccer on a rainy, cold Monday as the state-ranked Golden Knight's Boys team (no. 9 Class D) blanked Hermon-DeKalb 9-0, climbed to 7-0 and clinched at a tie for the division crown. The Lady Knights, also state ranked at no. 5 in the Class D poll, clinched at a share of the division title last week and gained a high-quality nonleague 3-1 win defeating a state-ranked opponent in St. Lawrence Central (13th Class C).

As the Lisbon Boy closed in on sole control of the division crown wins by 3-4-1 Heuvelton (7-2 over 4-4-0 Morristown) and 4-3-0 Harrisville (1-0 over Edwards-Knox 3-3-1) left all four teams separated by two points in the race for second place.

In one NAC East game St. Lawrence Central shaded Colton-Pierrepont 2-1 in overtime.

BOYS SOCCER

Lisbon 9 — H-D 0: Cole Jacobs and Lucas Gravlin scored twice and Cooper Rutherford (1 assist), Noah Gendebien (1 assist), Isaiah White, Caleb Hayden and Connor Claxton all scored single goals as the Knights clinched a repeat NAC West Division title. CJ and Tyler Jacobs passed out two assists and Truman Gendebien and Connor Jacobs each set up one goal while Tanner Fonda handed two saves in the shutout.

H-D goalie Hunter Bouchey turned in a strong game in goal for the Demons with a series of diving airborne saves.

Heuvelton 7 — Morristown 3: The Bulldogs scored five unanswered goals after Morristown's Kam Toland opened the scoring from Dann Hukovic. Rhys Brossoitt set up Bulldog goals by Cam Johnson and Landyn Ashlaw in the first half and Tristen Biller connected from Reid Doyle and Johson and Parker Felt tallied unassisted goals to give Heuvelton a 5-1 lead.

"We have moved people around positionwise and today was a big win in terms of positioning for the sectionals. This win was all about grit and getting the ball in the net," said Heuvelton Coach Bruce Durant after his Bulldogs reversed a first round loss to the Rockets.

"It was all about getting people in front of the net and getting off shots."

Walker Belisle knocked home the rebound of Kam Toland shot to provide a spark of live for the Rockets but the Bulldogs answered with Doyle converting a break on MCS keeper Peyton Donnelly and Johnson completing a hat trick by curling a corner kick into the net.

Donnelly finished with 13 saves and Heuvelton's Brody Kelly handled three chances.

Harrisville 1- E-K 0: Nolan Sullivan handled five saves backstopping a shutout by the Pirates' rearguard and Liam Winters scored the only goal of the game from Tanner Sullivan. Dawson Matthews handed four shots in a strong effort in the E-K goal.

GIRLS SOCCER

Lisbon 3 — SLC 1: The Lady Knights (12-1) added some valuable turf time and prevailed in a nonleague meeting of state ranked teams preparing for the upcoming Section 10 Tournament. Allison Bell scored all three goals for Lisbon (no. 5 Class D) netting two great one-times by Gabby Richardson and one from Ava Murphy in the win over the Larries (no. 12 Class C).

"In the first half we played some of our best soccer by building the ball and dominating possession. We've got back to back games playing Hermon-DeKalb tomorrow so we will rest up and be ready," said Lisbon Coach Courtney LaBeau.

Averee Bouchey continued her solid goaltending with three saves for the Knights.

Courtney Moreau converted off an assist from Cheyenne Sova for the Lady Larries (8-4) and Karissa Young turned aside nine shots.

In NAC Central Girls action Malone dropped Massena 2-1 leaf-frogged over the Raiders into first place. Other division games saw Salmon River blank OFA 4-0, Canton down Norwood-Norfolk 4-1 Gouverneur shut out Potsdam 2-0.

Malone 2 — Massena 1: The Huskies handed the Raiders their first NAC Central loss on the strength of first half goals by Brooke LaPlante and Hillary Baker which were sandwiched around a tally by the Raiders' Sydney Rochefort.

VOLLEYBALL

In Girls Volleyball action on Tuesday Indian River continued its undefeated run through its first NAC season and Canton extended its strong stretch run.

Indian River 3 — Massena 2: The Warriors passed their toughest of the season taking an intense 22-25, 25-10, 25-23, 21-25, 15-13.

Leading the way were: Sydney Carbone 18 kills, 9 aces, 19 digs and 22 points; Alyssa Ojeda 12 kills, 3 blocks, 4 digs, 1 ace and 7 points, Alena Riley 10 kills, 2 blocks and Lilian De Alba 28 assists, 13 digs, 1 ace and 8 points.

Canton 3 — Brushton-Moira 0: The Bears prevailed 25-4, 25-20 and 25-5 led by Josie Gabriel 10 kills, 1 assist, Emma Logan 7 points, 6 aces, 2 assists; Haley Perrin 6 points, 9 aces and Laurel Whittier 12 points, 9 aces, 2 assists.
