Lionel Messi Argentina kits are sold out after historic World Cup victory

Along Lionel Messi's journey to win his first World Cup, fans clamored to purchase his No. 10 Argentina kit. So much so that the jersey is sold out.

According to the official adidas website, four versions of Messi Argentina kits are sold out: the game day pre-match jersey, the Argentina 22 men's home jersey, the Argentina 22 home women's jersey and the Argentina 22 home authentic jersey.

“Following the incredible performance of the Argentina team throughout the FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022, we’ve been working to meet the extraordinary demand for jerseys and more stock will be available soon," an adidas spokesperson said in a statement released to USA TODAY Sports.

The blue and white stripes of the Argentina kit have become a symbol of hope and celebration as Messi guided La Albiceleste to their third World Cup trophy on Sunday in a victory over France that was decided by penalty kicks. This is the country's first World Cup title since Diego Maradona and his squad won in 1986.

Fans have taken to the streets of Argentina to celebrate the championship and Messi's jersey is seen everywhere, even in the sky.

For fans who want any sort of Messi merchandise, a basketball-style jersey is still available from the country's official sponsor. His club, Paris Saint-Germain, also has his Nike kit available for sale.

Fanatics and World Soccer Shop have started taking pre-sale orders for official adidas Messi kits featuring the newly-acquired third championship star above the crest. The jerseys are expected to ship in the spring.

"Since their history-making win we have produced a range of immediately available celebratory apparel," the adidas representative said, "and we will also create a brand new version of their iconic jersey, featuring three stars to mark their third World Championship, for fans around the globe as soon as possible.”

International pop superstar Bad Bunny was among those who donned a Messi jersey to celebrate the moment. He posted pictures of himself in the iconic kit along with a message of congratulations.

"It was accomplished!!!!" he wrote in Spanish. "Champions of the world!!!! Nobody deserved this more than you all!! Nobody fought it more than you all!!! Messi the GOAT!!!!!!!!!"

NHL star Alex Ovechkin is a longtime Messi fan. In 2018, the Washington Capitals gave their captain a Messi Barcelona jersey when he played in his 1,000th game.

“I was very excited,” Ovechkin said of Messi's crowning achievement. “Of course, everybody knows he’s my favorite player and to see finally he get his dream and win the World Cup, it’s pretty big for him and I’m very happy for him.”
