Liberty Union senior Slade McClaskey was involved in numerous high school activities

BALTIMORE − Liberty Union High School senior Slade McClaskey said his school probably chose him as its outstanding senior because of his involvement with the school the past four years.

"I do a lot of extra-curricular stuff around the school," he said. "They kind of come to me when they need somebody to tutor a kid here at the school. Just little things around the school they'll come to me and ask me to do, and I normally do them for them."

McClaskey played football and basketball and ran track for four years and lettered all four years in each sport. He also participated in the student-athlete leadership team, student council, was a student ambassador and on the National Honor Society, among other activities.

McClaskey will graduate with 4.1 grade point average.

He said time management was the key to balancing everything and still keeping his grades up.

"Just making sure I'm on top of everything," McClaskey said. "I try not to get behind on anything and let the load build-up."

He will attend Ashland University in the fall and study engineering and industrial systems.

"I want to get in the field of engineering," McClaskey said of his career aspirations. "I'm not exactly sure which direction I want to go yet. Ever since I was a young kid I've always loved designing new things and problem solving. I think that's the biggest thing of being an engineer. You've get to problem solve and you get to design a lot of new things to make other things better. That's why I think engineering would be a good thing for me."

He said he will miss high school and the relationships he had with other students, teachers and coaches.

McClaskey said incoming freshmen should also develop good time management skills.

"Don't let any of the work build up," he said. "Don't be scared to ask the older kids for help. Reach out to anybody for help."
