Lew Agius keeps rolling, notching another 700 and making it look easy

Lew Agius was back at it last week at Sunset Lanes, rolling his 14th 300 game as part of a 743 series that showed why he's been among St. George's top bowlers for more than a decade.

Lew Agius changed his zip code to one in St. George in 2011 after moving to the Beehive State from Michigan.

And it didn't take very long before other bowlers recognized his terrific bowling talent, and he's been one of the top bowlers in St. George ever since, and he continues adding to a glowing resume that can light up a night sky.

In bowling, the reality is the majority of bowlers will never bowl a 700 series because it's not easy to do. Agius just makes it look easy.

And his latest 700 series came after beginning SunRiver & Friends League play with a 233 game, followed by a 202, and put an exclamation point on a strong outing by finishing his third game with a 6-bagger in a clean 267 for a 702 series with 23 strikes while raising his average to a mouthwatering 220.

Not surprisingly, in all of his outings in the three leagues he's bowled in at this juncture of the season, he's only finished with one series under a 600, and it was a 590.

By the way, if you're a new bowler in the area and are wondering if I'm hyping his bowling talent and achievements, let's take a peek at a small sample of some of his achievements from his eye-popping resume.

He's thrown six sanctioned 800s, with three in St. George, has 23 career 300 games with 9 bowled in St. George, and has six career 299 games.

And he's won the high-average scoring title in St. George twice with a totally impressive 230 average each time, and the most consecutive strikes he's thrown in a league or tournament play is 19.

Bowling excellence runs in the family. Patrick, his son in Michigan has thrown 38 perfect 300 games and has booked an 800 series a jaw-dropping 25 times.

Away from bowling, he's a pitcher in senior softball, and Miguel Cabrera and Al Kaline are his two favorite Detroit Tigers players from over the years, while Barry Sanders and Calvin Johnson are hands down his two favorite players who've ever played for the Detroit Lions.

In other pin action, without much fanfare, Mo Davis (700-244) is another standout bowling talent with a killer strike ball who put up the other 700 of the week, and Al Oliveira V merits ink for a 692 series and 257 game while Dalton Smith, who's also a terrific pickleball player, tossed a 661 set with a high game of 234.

Cory Choate (650-226) who's also into hunting and fishing had a quality outing, Shane Wilson (639-232) delivered a first-rate effort, and Terry Beckham (633-245) merits ink for a good performance in the Sunday night league at Dixie Bowl.

In single game play, Rick Shields (657) blasted a 275 gem, Randy Brown (655) is a darn good bowler and punched out a 255, Chance Evans (637) popped a 237, Joel Redfearn (644) captures ink for a 244, and Tony Zaccheus (639) booked a 237.

Shawn Wonder, Chris DeMacedo, Sam Wells and Kyle Kidman logged games of 215, 213, 209 and 200, respectively.

In women's action, Ashley Thomas (615-214) joined Margie O'Neill (633-234)  in leading the women's scoring parade, Donna Jo Judson (538-190) had a good week on the lanes, and Anne Brosier, an avid fan of all the major Colorado professional sports teams posted a 530.

Karen Balicki (515-202)  is edging closer to ending a scoring funk, Pat Verchota has been doing a super job running the Women's 500 Club Tournaments for lotsa years and mowed down 515 pins, Diana Stauffer KO'd 514 sticks, and Indianna Polatis-Nay (512-208) delivered a solid effort.

In the single game arena, Stephanie Miller (568) shot a 223, Susan Hill (583) chalked up a 216, Dawn Thomas (523) booked a 213, and Debbie Lehnen (583) tallied a 200 on the nose.

It should be noted that due to the Huntsman Games canceling all league play this week, there will not be a bowling column next week.
