LCU's Garcia, Spencer win conference titles

Lubbock Christian University freshman George Garcia won the men's 400 meters and ran on the winning 1,600-meter relay during the Lone Star Conference track and field championships that concluded Sunday at the Sports Performance Center.

Garcia ran the 400 in 47.29 seconds. Garcia, Ryan Gordon, Chris Rader, and Keitron Boyd won the 1,600 relay in 3 minutes, 12.90 seconds. Both times are school records.

LCU's Bryce Spencer from Sundown won the weight throw with a mark of 63 feet, 0 1/4 inch, and Kevin Washington won the triple jump (48-3 1/2).

Rader took fifth place in the 400 meters in 48.96, and Keitron Boyd got seventh in the 200 with a 21.76.

The LCU women had two fifth-place relays. The distance medley relay of Michaelle Sime, Sheyla Vilca, Sydney Jones and Chloe Trull ran a time of 13:12.27, and the 1,600 relay team of Sime, Jozlyn Arana, Kiley Cummings and Joy Edwu ran a 3:53.16.

Madelyn Merrell finished fifth in the 800 meters (2:21.81) and sixth in the mile (5:13.62).

SPC women's basketball

CLARENDON — Celia Sumbane and Daiysha Brown scored 17 points apiece and South Plains College beat Clarendon College 63-52 Monday night, maintaining its one-game lead in the Western Junior College Athletic Conference.

Jennifer Silva had eight points and 15 rebounds for South Plains (16-8, 10-1), which leads No. 22 New Mexico Junior College (20-4, 9-2) by a game. The Lady Texans host Western Texas (5-19, 0-12) at 5:45 p.m. Thursday in their regular-season home finale.

SPC men's basketball

CLARENDON — Aamod Scarbrough scored 18 points and No. 21 Clarendon College held off No. 17 South Plains College in a key WJCAC game Monday night.

Jamal West and Jeriah Coleman scored 14 and 10 points, respectively, for Clarendon (23-5, 11-3), which is in second place in the conference and widened its lead on South Plains (21-6, 9-4) to 1 1/2 games. Both are chasing No. 4 Odessa College (25-2, 12-1).

Jaden Harris led the Texans with 18 points.

Lubbock Christian University forward Rowan Mackenzie was named the Lone Star Conference player of the week for the third time this season.

The 6-foot-3 junior from Perth, Western Australia scored 20 points Thursday in an 82-57 victory against St. Edward's and had 21 points and 10 rebounds Saturday in a 77-69 win against St. Mary's. Both were home games.

Mackenzie is the conference's second-leading scorer at an average of 19.9 points per game. He also has been named the LSC defensive player of the week once this season.

Wayland women's basketball

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist forward Jenna Cooper-Jackson was named the Sooner Athletic Conference player of the week for the second time this season and the sixth time in her career.

The 6-foot senior from Claude scored 20 points, including the game-winning basket at the buzzer, 73-71 victory Thursday against the University of Science & Arts of Oklahoma. She had 28 points and eight assists Saturday in a 90-62 conquest of Texas Wesleyan. USAO was ranked No. 18 and Texas Wesleyan No. 17.

Wayland (19-9) is the No. 4 seed in the SAC tournament and hosts No. 5 seed John Brown (20-8) in a first-round game at 6 p.m. Thursday at Hutcherson Center.

Wayland baseball

PLAINVIEW — Wayland Baptist sophomore righthander Tyler Wade was named the Sooner Athletic Conference pitcher of the week for the second week in a row.

Wade threw a one-hitter in with 10 strikeouts Saturday in a 5-0 victory against McPherson. He walked two.

The previous Saturday, the Midland High graduate struck out 17 in a 1-0 loss to Tabor. This is his first season at Wayland after previous stops at Tennessee and Odessa College.
