Larry French column: Olson, Dobson showing mid-season form at Crystal Lanes

It sure didn’t take John Olson and Nick Dobson very long to show off their mid-season form at Crystal Lanes. A couple of weeks for John and opening night for the men’s league for Nick.

For the Big ‘O’ it was just a matter of a couple of weeks of warming up to the new lanes. It’s amazing what a couple of new panels on each lane does to a bowler. In the appropriately named Striking Seniors League, John did just that. Throw a lot strikes. After opening with a 233 game, John kicked it up a notch the next two games and registered scores of 243 and 245 for a 721 series. Obviously the first senior seven of the season.

In that same league, Gary Gustin put together three deuces (224-201-245) for a robust 670 series.

In other senior league action, a quintet of bowlers topped the 600 mark in the Chilson-Wilcox Senior Men’s League. John Stermer carded three deuces (224-208-220) for a 652 to edge out Tom Sirois for league honors. Tom put together games of 203, 226 and 221 for his 650 set. Steve Crozier shook off a so-so start and bagged games of 231 and 224 to finish with a 644 while Dan VanArtsdalen tossed a 612 series. Harry Goltry rounded out the quintet when he capped a 607 set with a 225 game.

There were also a pair of Dons who launched sixes in the Go-Getters Mixed League. Don Machuga and Don Pierce each carded a 603 series.

Nice week for the seniors.

It didn’t take Nick Dobson long to crack open the 300 game treasure chest. Now we just gotta get in there and see how many are in there.

He got the first one while competing in the Hatfield Real Estate Men’s League. After opening with a 255 game and a second game struggle, it was nothing but Xs in game three. You know what 12 in a row means. Yup. Perfect game. 300 game. Take your pick. And that pushed him to a 725 series.

That Hatfield League was also the scene for the high series of the week. Josh Campbell has come back with a vengeance and took weekly honors with a 770 series. The big fella warmed up with a 231 game and turned on the jets. A 279 game was chased by a 269 to give him a 770 series. Welcome back big guy.

Four other guys also topped seven in this league. Paul Brion closed a 744 set with games of 266 and 268 while Jason Huntley posted a 717 and Tim DeGraw capped his convenient 711 series with a 277 game. Derik Lisi made it an even half dozen with a 710 series.

Three fellows in the Tire World League topped seven, paced by Ricky Pruden and his 721 set. Jim Sjoblom came up with a 710 series while Max Dunning slipped in a 704 set. Two other leagues had a pair of 700s. Chad Farr and Corey Bigelow paced the Gary Cortright Memorial Mixed League with scores of 727 and 701, respectively.

In the Joey’s Contracting Mixed League, Jim Pitts rode games of 267 and 265 to a 721 series with Brandon Farr chipping in with a 709 set. Jason Huntley registered the only other seven this week when he rattled off a 726 series in the Sun Legends Bar & Grille Mixed League.

More from Larry French: Still time to join a league as seniors kick off bowling season at Crystal Lanes

Four ladies kicked off their season with 600s while competing in the ‘L’ Ladies League. Jean Blauvelt led the way by riding a 255 game to a 647 series. Deon Frost posted three deuces on her way to a 630 total while Kim Lovell capped a 618 set with a 245 game and Cheryl Rice made it a quartet with her 613.

That’s a pretty decent first week.

There are still some openings for teams and individuals for league bowling. Contact Crystal Lanes during regular business hours and they will find a league that fits your schedule and skill level. Check with Anita Gennosa or Heather Farr and they will fix you up.
