Lakeview girls tennis wins regional title, heading to state meet

Before last year, Lakeview had missed out on making the state meet in girls tennis for seven years.

Now the Spartans are heading to the final tournament of the year for the second season in a row.

Lakeview qualified for the Michigan High School Athletic Association State Tennis Finals by winning its Division 2 regional at Mason on Thursday.

Lakeview finished in a tie for first place with East Lansing with 21 team points to qualify for the finals, which will be June 2-3 in Midland.

No. 1 singles player Sade Blackwell earned a regional championship for the second year in a row, last season winning at No. 2 singles. Blackwell defeated Leah Wronikowski of East Lansing in straight sets, 6-0, 6-0, in the finals.

The Spartans' Emmy Ruger won her flight at No. 4 singles, defeating Grace Rose of East Lansing, 6-3, 6-7, 6-4.

The Lakeview No. 3 doubles team also came up with big points, as the team of Dawt Sung and Ashley Thawnluai won their flight with a 6-3, 6-3 win in the finals.

Lakeview's No. 2 singles player Caitlyn Miller, the No. 1 doubles team of Mallory Kowalski/Annabelle Minneman and the No. 4 doubles team of Alina Murata/Abby Winer all had second-place finishes in the regional.

In Division 3, Harper Creek, Marshall and Pennfield all competed in a regional at Vicksburg on Thursday. Parma Western won the team title as Pennfield took fourth and Harper Creek placed fifth.

League Golf

State-ranked Jackson Lumen Christi dominated the action, winning the Interstate 8 Conference Championship in boys golf at Cedar Creek Golf Course in Battle Creek on Thursday. Lumen Christi had a team score of 314, with five golfers all shooting under 81. Harper Creek finished fourth in the championship with a round of 330. That result allowed the Beavers to take third in the overall league standings. Sophomore Spencer Denney carded an 81 to lead the Beavers and finished with all-conference honors. Harper Creek's Joey Mario had an 82 and Colton Beard at 83. Kaleb Vincent had an 84 to lead Marshall and Landon Roach had a 96 to lead Pennfield.
