Kyle Morlock settling in as one of Florida State's top tight ends | The NoleBook

Florida State football and coaches players arrive for the 13th FSU spring football practice of the 2023 season on Thursday, April 13, 2023.

Florida State has welcomed in a handful of transfers this offseason, all donning new colors this coming fall. However, tight end Kyle Morlock has made debatably one of the larger jumps among the transfer group, going from Division II Shorter University to Power 5 FSU.

While he has had no issue learning a new playbook, the biggest adjustment has come to the size of his teammates and opponents.

"The overall size of people has been different," Morlock said. "The speed hasn't been too much of a difference, but moving that fast with everybody has been a little bit of an adjustment."

Despite making a few adjustments, Morlock has meshed well with the rest of the FSU tight ends and offense, emerging as an early candidate for the starting position.

Tight ends coach Chris Thomsen said that Morlock's ability to be used in different spots of the offense has allowed him to be a special player.

"If we want to play at the premiere, the slot or the five, he can do really well out there as a receiver-type player," Thomsen said. "But he also has the bulk and the willingness to go in, attach, play in the backfield and play as an effective blocker in the box."

"You can't discount the intelligence to do that. It's not easy to do that learning two positions instead of one. He's done a great job of tying that all together and operating really effectively in both areas."

Here are our observations from the ninth practice of FSU fall camp.

Observations from Practice 9 of FSU fall camp

  • Big catch for a big gain by Kyle Morlock pass from Jordan Travis in early periods 11-on-11.

  • Greedy Vance goes up for an interception on a jump ball in the end zone.

  • Ryan Fitzgerald connects on a field goal from 31 yards.

  • Tate Rodemaker to Joshua Burrell for a big gainer. That's been a strong connection in camp.

  • Under heavy pressure, Jordan Travis dumps a ball off to CJ Campbell who breaks it off for a big run.

  • Jordan Travis's back shoulder throw to Kyle Morlock. Makes a nice catch and keeps both feet in bounds to finish the catch.

  • Tate Rodemaker to Vandrevius Jacobs on a deep ball. Jacobs beat his man in coverage easily and was wide open. Ball was a tad underthrown.

  • Jerrael Powers with a great sideline catch going over Kalen DeLoach to "Moss" the ball. Great high point and location of the ball.

  • Greedy Vance records a pass breakup on Deuce Spann.

  • Jordan Travis hit Kyle Morlock in the corner, but Morlock bobbled and dropped the ball. Great placement by Jordan Travis.

  • Great catch from Preston Daniel in the red zone from Jordan Travis. Made a leaping catch over Azareye’h Thomas.

  • Great pressure from Azareye’h Thomas forces the play dead. He got to Jordan Travis quickly after the snap. If the play was live, Jordan Travis would have dumped it off but been hit either way.

  • Vandrevius Jacobs with a nice diving catch from Rodemaker. Ball was thrown low and Jacobs made a good adjustment to get to it.

  • Brock Glenn to Vandervius Jacobs on a slant route. Jacobs got in a good position to get open and give Glenn a big target to hit.

  • Tate Rodemaker hits Deuce Spann on a good sideline route. The two connect again on the very next play. Deuce Spann has been healthy this fall and looks like someone who can contribute.

  • Tate Rodemaker hits Vandervius Jacobs in a tight window. Jacobs had a great spring and is able to make some noise in the last few practices. Norvell came over to Jacobs to give him props after the change of drills.

  • Greedy Vance with an interception on the throw from Travis to Bell in the back of the endzone. Kalen Deloach is also in coverage.

  • Brock Glenn goes through progressions, no one opens and turns into a coverage sack. Smart by him to not force a ball.

  • DJ Lundy does a good job sniffing out a run by Deuce Spann and tackles him for no/minimal gain.

  • Mike Norvell has spent a lot of time watching video boards and giving critiques to players in-between plays.

  • Christian White makes a nice break on the ball and almost intercepts a pass from Glenn. Ball was intended for Hill. Christian White baited the route and was able to make the defense play.

  • Johnny Wilson open on a post route against Azareye’h Thomas. Jordan Travis hits him in stride for a big gainer.

  • Screen pass to Jaheim Bell was well executed. Braden Fiske got in Jordan Travis' face but he calmly makes the pass and it goes for a big gain.

  • Liam McCormick vets into the backfield and forces a throwaway from Rodemaker. Great penetration and break off the line.

  • Tate Rodemaker drops a perfect ball between Peter Warrick Jr. and Danj Altine to hit Hykeem Williams on a go route for a touchdown. Hill threw his hands up as soon as pass was made to celebrate TD.

  • Poor throw on the run from Tate Rodemaker. Edwin Joseph makes an easy interception.

  • Johnny Wilson with a good catch in the back of the end zone from Jordan Travis. Ryan Fitzgerald makes PAT.

  • Liam McCormick and DJ Lundy get home to end the play and get a 'sack' on Glenn.
