KU football player Joe Krause arrested, according to Douglas County Sheriff’s Office

LAWRENCE — Joe Krause was arrested Monday for allegedly committing aggravated criminal threat, causing terror, evacuation or disruption, according to the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office.

The office’s booking report lists Krause as being arrested by the University of Kansas Police Department just after 4:30 p.m. Monday on Alabama St.

Krause, who is on the roster as a college football player for the Kansas Jayhawks, is listed as a redshirt sophomore offensive lineman from Prairie Village, Kansas. He has not played in any games the past two seasons. He did make two appearances in 2020.

"We are aware of a situation involving one of our student-athletes," Kansas Athletics said Tuesday in a statement. "We take the safety of our staff, student-athletes and coaches very seriously. We are gathering more information and will have no further comment at this time."

The arrest came the same day the University of Kansas Police Department said in a release it responded to a bomb threat at 3:01 p.m. that was made against KU football facilities. No devices were found after an evacuation of David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, the Anderson Family Football Complex and Beatty Family Pavilion. An all-clear was later issued at approximately 8:01 p.m. Monday.

The University of Kansas Police Department did not confirm Krause is the one who made the threat. However, according to Douglas County District Court records obtained Tuesday, the charging document alleges Krause "did unlawfully, feloniously, and with the intent to place another in fear, or to cause the evacuation, lock down or disruption in regular, ongoing activities of any building, communicate a threat to commit violence, and a public, commercial, or industrial building, place of assembly, or facility of transportation, to-wit: KU football facilities, was evacuated, locked down, or disrupted as to regular, ongoing activities as a result of the threat, a severity level 5 person felony."

Krause’s arrest comes about a week before Kansas is set to start fall camp. The Jayhawks’ season opens Sept. 1 at home against Missouri State. Krause’s status is unclear at the moment.

According to the charging document Krause faces a penalty range, "From a minimum of 31 months to a maximum of 136 months in prison and/or a fine of up to $300,000 and 24 months of post-release supervision."

Krause first appeared in court Tuesday. According to the Douglas County Sheriff's Office, he posted $10,000 bail and is no longer an inmate. According to a public information officer from the Douglas County District Attorney’s Office, he is next scheduled to appear in court Aug. 2.

According to the University of Kansas Police Department, there was a bomb threat July 24, 2023 against the KU football facilities. No devices were found.
