Kris Murray earns All-American honors from Associated Press

It appears that Iowa forward Kris Murray’s decision to return to school for his junior season is paying off in a big way!

Taking over the mantel for his twin brother Keegan, a current starter for the playoff-bound Sacramento Kings, Kris Murray has been the star man for the Iowa Hawkeyes all season. Receiving a boatload of praise for his stellar play all season, Kris Murray was recognized on Tuesday as an Associated Press third-team All-American.

The Associated Press released their All-American teams Tuesday afternoon, featuring a number of Big Ten players. Of course, Purdue’s big man Zach Edey was the highlight of the first team, receiving all 58 first-place votes. He is joined on the first team by Indiana’s Trayce Jackson-Davis. Penn State senior Jalen Pickett received second-team honors.

Murray was the Big Ten’s lone third-team representative. He is joined by Kansas State’s Markquis Nowell and Keyontae Johnson, Marquette’s Tyler Kolek, as well as North Carolina’s Armando Bacot.

Making the AP All-American third team is just the latest honor bestowed upon Murray. The Cedar Rapids native was recently named to the All-Big Ten First-Team and is a finalist for the Karl Malone Award.

Kris Murray led the Hawkeyes with an average of 20.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game. One of the most versatile scorers in the nation, Murray helped lead Iowa to a No. 8 seed in the 2023 NCAA Tournament where they will play ninth-seed Auburn on Thursday.

“Yeah, it’s definitely a really good opponent, someone we’re excited to play. We always want to play teams in really good conferences who come from really good histories and are really well coached. To be able to draw them, it’s going to be a really fun matchup I think.

“You’ve got to be grateful at all times when you get selected into the NCAA Tournament, because it’s honestly a once in a lifetime thing. I’ve been grateful to be selected the three years I’ve been in college,” Iowa star forward Kris Murray said of the Hawkeyes’ tournament matchup.

Iowa tips off against Auburn at 5:50 p.m. CT on Thursday night on TNT from Legacy Arena in Birmingham, Ala.
