What to know about new Tennessee Titans DB Terrell Edmunds from Kevin Byard trade

The Tennessee Titans acquired defensive back Terrell Edmunds from the Eagles on Monday in a trade that sent Kevin Byard to Philadelphia.

Edmunds was drafted in the first round (No. 28 overall) by the Pittsburgh Steelers in 2018 and has a wealth of starting experience in the NFL.

For now, the 26-year-old is known in Nashville as the other player in the Byard trade. He'll have at least 11 games to change that narrative this season.

Here's what you need to know about Edmunds:

Terrell Edmunds a star at Virginia Tech

Edmunds played multiple positions for the Hokies and defensive coordinator Bud Foster, mostly safety or linebacker and excelling at both. He broke out in his sophomore season, with four interceptions, 4.5 tackles for a loss and 101 total tackles as Virginia Tech earned an ACC Coastal Division title.

He played with a shoulder injury through most of the 2017 season, missing the final three games after electing to have surgery. Despite that, Edmunds still had 61 total tackles and two interceptions and was named third team All-ACC. He decided to forgo his senior season and entered the NFL draft.

Up and down with the Pittsburgh Steelers

Edmunds started 15 games as a rookie for the Steelers. He started in 60 of 65 games in his first four seasons, but never had more than two interceptions or two sacks in a season, and he has had 100 or more tackles in a season just once in his career.

The Steelers declined Edmunds' fifth-year option in his rookie contract. He re-signed with Pittsburgh on a modest one-year deal in 2022 after a solid 2021 season, when he had a career-high eight tackles for a loss.

Edmunds continued his steady play in 2022, but he became a free agent this year.

A value free agent signing by the Eagles, then the trade to the Titans

Despite the Steelers making Edmunds an offer in free agency, he signed a one-year deal worth $2 million with the defending NFC champion Philadelphia Eagles.

Edmunds played at least 87% of the defensive snaps in five of the Eagles' seven games, per Pro Football Reference and led the team in tackles in Sunday's win over the Miami Dolphins.

Pro Football Focus ranks Edmunds as the 61st-best safety (out of 84) in the NFL in 2023.

Terrell's brother is Bears linebacker

Terrell's younger brother is linebacker Tremaine Edmunds, age 25, who also was a first-round pick (No. 16 overall) in the 2018 draft and was selected by the Buffalo Bills. The two played together at Virginia Tech.

Following five years in Buffalo, the two-time Pro Bowl linebacker signed a four-year, $72 million deal with the Chicago Bears. He is 10th in the NFL in total tackles (62) this season.
