Get to know new Sixers addition Kelly Oubre Jr. after agreeing to deal

The Philadelphia 76ers made a late move in free agency when they brought in Kelly Oubre Jr. on a one-year deal. Oubre gives Philadelphia much-needed help on the wing, and it allows him to contribute on a contender.

Oubre will join a bench unit looking for scoring from the wing spot. Philadelphia looks for him, De’Anthony Melton, Danuel House Jr. and Furkan Korkmaz to give the bench a spark.

Oubre was the 15th pick in the 2015 NBA draft by the Atlanta Hawks before being sent to the Washington Wizards on draft night. He has also played for the Phoenix Suns, Golden State Warriors and most recently the Charlotte Hornets. He has career averages of 12.8 points, 4.4 rebounds and 1 assists while shooting 43.4% from the floor and 33% from deep.

He has been to the playoffs twice in his career. Both of those times came in Washington as the Wizards made the postseason in 2017 and 2018. He averages 7 points and 2.8 rebounds in the playoffs.

This is the area where Oubre will make his highest impact. He averaged 20.3 points and 5.2 rebounds with the Hornets in 2022-23 but shot just 43.1% from the floor. Per NBA Stats, he shot just 32.3% on catch-and-shoot 3-pointers. He also shot just 32.5% on catch-and-shoot opportunities overall. The catch-and-shoot numbers will have to improve for him to find his role next to Joel Embiid and James Harden on the offensive end. However, he does offer somebody who can create his own shot and score in bunches.

Oubre needs work on this end of the floor, but his length offers some interesting possibilities. He averaged 1.4 steals in the 2022-23 season and he can play the passing lanes well. Standing 6 feet, 7 inches and offering athleticism, the Sixers look for him to make an impact on defense. Coach Nick Nurse will demand more out of him in this department.
