Key Wisconsin linebacker suspended after violating student-athlete discipline policy

MADISON – Inside linebacker Jordan Turner, expected to be one of the key members of Wisconsin's defense this season, has been suspended indefinitely after violating the athletic department's student-athlete discipline policy.

UW athletic director Chris McIntosh announced the move on Friday.

According to UW:

The redshirt junior from Farmington, Michigan, remains on the official roster but will remain suspended from practice and games until the completion of an inquiry required under the policy.

Turner is allowed to use the sports medicine facility, the academic support center and the weight training room.

Turner released a statement Friday:

“Earlier this week, I was cited with an OWI first offense along with additional traffic violations.

"My parents raised me to do the right things in life and unfortunately this time, I didn't. I made the wrong decision.

"I'm very disappointed and embarrassed and I want to personally apologize to my parents, my teammates, my coaches, the fans and the University of Wisconsin.

"I take this matter very seriously and I vow to learn from this and be a better man going forward.”

According to Wisconsin Circuit Court online records:

Turner was clocked driving 47 miles-per-hour over the posted speed limit on I-39/90 on June 5 in Rock County. His initial court appearance is scheduled for 8 a.m. on July 20.

Turner started 11 of 13 games last season and finished second on the team in tackles with 68. He was named defensive MVP of the Guaranteed Rate Bowl after recording 1½ tackles for loss and eight total tackles in UW's 24-17 victory over Oklahoma State.

Turner and Maema Njongmeta, who led UW in tackles last season with 95, worked with the No. 1 defense all spring.
