Kernel girls tennis continue strong play in duals with road victories
Sep. 20—WATERTOWN — Mitchell earned a key victory on Tuesday to remain undefeated in Eastern South Dakota Conference girls tennis duals this season, winning 5-4 at Watertown.
The Kernels won two of the three doubles matches to hold the edge in the dual after the two schools split six singles matches.
Carsyn Weich and Elly Clement won 6-3, 6-4 at No. 2 doubles and Katie Morgan and Matteah Graves won 6-0, 6-4 at No. 3 doubles to seal up two points for the Kernels. No. 1 pair Delaney Degen and Megan Mastel nearly won a lengthy match with Ellie Zink and Leyla Meester, with the Arrows' side winning 6-3, 2-6 and 14-12.
In singles play, Weich won at No. 3 singles by a score of 6-2, 6-1 and Morgan was a 6-2, 6-0 winner at No. 4 singles, with Graves winning 6-2, 6-1 at Flight 6.
On Monday, Mitchell won 8-1 over Vermillion, including sweeping all six singles matches. Sophia Huber, Mastel, Weich, Morgan, Clement and Graves all won their matches in convincing fashion over the Tanagers. Weich/Clement and Morgan/Graves won their matches in doubles play for MHS in the victory.
Mitchell (14-2 in duals, 7-0 ESD) will host a triangular on Friday, Sept. 22 with Aberdeen Central and Brandon Valley. Action is scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., and the duals are a rescheduled competition from Sept. 2. Mitchell will then play in the two-day Eastern South Dakota Conference meet starting at 2 p.m. on Monday, Sept. 25.
