Keep up with the Week 7 action on the lohud Boys Lacrosse Scoreboard

This is the last full week of the regular season across the Lower Hudson Valley so any program with lofty postseason expectations will be looking to lock down homefield for as long as possible.

A number of telling matchups will keep things interesting.

Somers will be taking on John Jay and Rye this week. Iona Prep closes out against Shenendehowa. Westlake is visiting Haldane and Yorktown will be hosting Lakeland/Panas for the annual Murphy Cup game.

Tuesday

John Jay 11, Somers 10

A lot can happen in 12 minutes.

John Jay built a comfortable lead Tuesday and was on the verge of blowing out Somers when the Tusker recovered gracefully and jolted the Wolves back to reality.

It was a heck of a comeback.

Andrew Kiefer set up Justin Shapiro for a goal that halted the onslaught with 2:08 remaining. It gave John Jay an 11-10 win along with a league title.

"We came out hungry, we came out fast and everything was clicking,” said John Jay midfielder Brendan Corelli, who had the Wolves up 10-4 in the final seconds of the third quarter after he rolled up the alley for a goal. “Then in the fourth quarter it slowed down a little and they went on a big run. We came back and got one more, which shows we keep playing even when things aren’t going well for us.”

Recruiting: High school boys lacrosse recruits are again adjusting to the new normal

Ryan Brush and Mac Sullivan got everyone's attention with four goals in a span of seven minutes. Cam Violante made it a one-possession game and Miguel Iglesias rushed the crease, netting the equalizer with 3:02 remaining.

"It was definitely tough," Kiefer said. "Somers has a bunch of great players and the one thing we talked about at halftime was, 'Don't get too high. Don't get too low.' I think for a moment there we got too high and crashed. It was a great learning experience. We're going to face more great teams in sectionals and this was a good test. Rye is probably in our future. It was a good lesson on what to do when a team is coming back and we have to stay composed and get back to the basics."

John Jay's Dom Savastano (15) gets chased by Somers Luca Ploger (4) and Luke Duffy (33) during lacrosse action at John Jay High School in Cross River May 7, 2024. John Jay won the game 11-10.

What it means

John Jay was reeling in the fourth quarter and learned about the fragility of a lead when there's a quality team on the opposite sideline. There has to be a measure of consolation in knowing that when they needed to make a timely play, they were able to dial back in.

Somers found out it's more than capable of dominating a ranked opponent when it's not forcing the issue and putting the ball on the ground.

John Jay's Luca Diva (2) drives to the goal in front of Somers goalie Landon Pepe (22) during lacrosse action at John Jay High School in Cross River May 7, 2024. John Jay won the game 11-10.

Player of the game

Kiefer was the organizer when the John Jay offense was humming and then a source of calm when the game nearly slipped away.
