KC Current increase win streak to 3 with win over Angel City

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Current have started the 2024 season with a three-game win streak after a 4-2 win over Angel City FC at a sold-out CPKC Stadium on Saturday.

Left back Izzy Rodriguez kicked a long pass to Bia Zaneratto on the left wing, who fought for the ball as Angel City center back Sarah Gorden fell and left her open to make a run on the wing.

Bia sent the ball to Temwa Chawinga who shifted to the left on her first touch to create space for Vanessa DiBernardo who sent a right-footed shot to the top right corner for the first goal of the game in the seventh minute.

In the 48th minute, right back Ellie Wheeler won the ball and began a passing sequence that went from her to Bia, back to Wheeler and to DiBernardo, who sent a curving cross in the box to left winger Alexa Spaanstra, who got the header goal.

VAR review confirmed the goal after reviewing for offside.

The second half started with former FC Kansas City forward Sydney Leroux scoring in the 50th minute.

KC responded with a Temwa goal just two minutes later as Spaanstra kicked a pass to Bia who shoved off a defender to pass to a wide-open Temwa who sent a right-footed shot to the top right corner to give the Current a 3-1 lead.

Angel City came right back as Madison Curry brought ACFC within one with a goal off of a corner kick in the 79th minute and Rocky Rodriguez scored in the 84th minute off of another corner kick to tie the match.

VAR review disallowed the goal due to offside.

Bia scored in the 92nd minute in stoppage time after a punch out from Anderson landed right at her feet in the box to secure the win. Bia and Temwa ended the match with a goal and an assist.

Wheeler showed a lot of aggression on the pitch with her defending and fighting for headers. One of her fights for headers resulted in a yellow card when she jumped on top of Leroux on a corner kick in the 41st minute.

The Current ended the match with 17 shots (11 in the first half) to ACFC’s 16. Angel City also dominated possession with 58%.
