Kansas State women's basketball faces daunting Big 12 Conference schedule
MANHATTAN — Kansas State women's basketball could well have its strongest team in 10 years under coach Jeff Mittie, but with a challenging schedule to match.
The Big 12 released its conference slate on Tuesday and the Wildcats must face potential league powers Texas, Oklahoma, Iowa State and Kansas twice each, along with newcomer Central Florida.
According to a Big 12 news release, all 14 conference teams will face five opponents twice and the other eight once. Opponents were selected based on a combination of geography, historical results and a poll of the coaches in order to best balance the schedule in terms of travel and competitiveness.
The Wildcats face league newcomers in each of their first three conference games, opening on the road Dec. 30 at Cincinnati, then playing host to Houston on Jan. 3 before going back on the road Jan. 6 to UCF.
The two Sunflower Showdown matchups against reigning WNIT champion Kansas take place Jan. 20 at Bramlage Coliseum and Feb. 25 in Lawrence. The home game against the Jayhawks is half of a doubleheader with a men's game between K-State and Oklahoma State.
