K-State football recap: Texas edges Wildcats in overtime, 33-30

AUSTIN, Texas — Bert Auburn kicked a 42-yard field goal in overtime and K-State failed on fourth down to win it as the Longhorns prevailed 33-30 Saturday at Darrell K Royal-Texas Memorial Stadium.

Kansas State rallied from a 20-point deficit in the second half and had a chance to either win for tie in the closing minutes, but came up empty when Tennant missed a 27-yard field goal with 1:45 left.

But the Wildcats got the ball back and Tennant got another shot — he didn't miss to send it to overtime knotted at 30-30.

Bert Auburn kicked what could have been the game winner with a 34-yard field goal with 6:03 left after K-State had come back to tied the game.

K-State only had 106 yards in the first half but finished regulation with 339 as Will Howard completed 25 of 38 passes for 308 yards and four touchdowns in retulation.

But the Wildcats never got a running game going, finishing with 31 yards on the ground.

Missed field goal dooms K-State

Kansas State had a fourth down and 2 at the Texas 9-yard line and elected to go for a tying field goal.

It turned out to be a bad decision when Chris Tennant's 27-yarder went wide left and ended the Wildcats' comeback.

Texas regains lead with field goal

The scoring drive went 69 yards in 14 plays and took 6:27 off the clock.

Kansas State all the way back with 27-27 tie

K-State defensive end Brendan Mott forces a fumble and Will Lee recovers at the Texas 32. One play later, Will Howard delivers a 32-yard strike to Jayce Brown for the touchdown.

The point after exchange is bad, so the Wildcats muff a chance to take the lead with 12:37 left.

Jacob Parrish pick sets up K-State touchdown

All of a sudden we have a game. K-State's Jacob Parrish comes up with his second interception of the game and returns it to the Texas 12.

Two plays later, Will Howard finds Keagan Johnson for the 12-yard touchdown. Two plays, 12 yards, Wildcats trail 27-21 with 13:33 left.

END 3Q: Texas 27, Kansas State 14

Kansas State puts together a 75-yard scoring drive and closes the third quarter with a 26-yard touchdown pass from Will Howard to Phillip Brooks and cuts the Texas lead to 27-14.

Texas extends lead to 27-7 with long field goal

Bert Auburn drills a 49-yard field goal to push Texas' lead to 27-7 with 4:13 left in the third quarter.

The Longhorn scoring drive went for 41 yards in seven plays.

Turnover proves costly for K-State

Kansas State quarterback Will Howard is sacked by Jaylan Ford for a 14-yard loss and fumbles. After video review, the ruling is that Texas' Ethan Burke recovers.

One play later, Jonathon Brooks scores from 5 yards out and the Longhorn lead goes to 24-7 with 9:21 left in the third quarter.

HALFTIME: Texas 17, Kansas State 7

Texas dominated the first half statistically with 307 yards total offense, but thanks to a blocked punt by K-State's Shane Porter, the Wildcats are still in the game, trailing 17-7.

K-State had just 106 yards in the half, 42 of which came on the drive after Porter's punt block.

Will Howard is 7 of 13 passing for 78 yards and one score. The Wildcats have just 28 yards on the ground.

For Texas, Maalik Murphy is 12 of 21 for 175 yards. CJ Baxter has 65 yards and Jonathon Brooks 50 rushing, and Adonai Mitchell four catches for 101 yards.

Blocked punt sets up K-State score

K-State creates another sudden change with Shane Porter punt block and four plays later, K-State scores on a 6-yard Will Howard-to-Phillip Brooks pass play.

The drive included a 28-yard completion to Jayce Brown and the Wildcats are down, 17-7, with 0:54 left in the half.

Jacob Parrish with the pick for K-State

K-State cornerback Jacob Parrish, who was victimized twice on deep balls to Adonai Mitchell earlier, gets and uncontested interception near his end zone on a miscommunication by Texas as Maalik Murphy puts it where only the Wildcats had a play on it.

Texas still leads 17-0 with 7:33 left in the half.

Kansas State with fourth-down stop

Kansas State finally stalls Texas, getting a fourth-down stop with 3:39 left in the half.

But the Wildcats are starting on their 19-yard line and have just 32 yards total offense so far to 303 for Texas.

Another explosive, another Texas TD

Texas opted to go for it on fourth down and 1 from its 46-yard line with a quick toss right to CJ Baxter, who broke free for a 54-yard touchdown run.

The Longhorn drive went 63 yards in vour plays and K-State trails 17-0 with 11:34 left in the half. Texas has outgained the Wildcats 246 yards to 26.

END 1Q: Texas 10, Kansas State 0

Bert Auburn's 32-yard field goal with 1:06 left in the first quarter puts Texas up, 10-0. The Longhorn drive covered 79 yards in nine plays.

K-State almost got out unscathed, but VJ Payne could not hold on for a an end zone interception on third down.

Texas strikes first with big pass play

After Xavier Worthy's punt return set Texas up in K-State territory, the Longhorns get on the board with a 37-yard strike from Maalik Murphy to Adonai Mitchell, to put the Longhorns in front, 7-0, with 8:36 left in the first.
