Kaepernick still 49ers starting QB
Colin Kaepernick will continue starting at quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers, coach Jim Harbaugh announced Monday.
Kaepernick started his third straight game for the 49ers on Sunday but questions arose after the 16-13 overtime loss to the St. Louis Rams.
Harbaugh decided to stay with Kaepernick after watching film of the game in which Kaepernick completed 21 of 32 passes for 208 and rushed for 84 yards. However, he gave up a safety and made a wild option pitch to wide receiver Ted Ginn Jr. that was picked up by the Rams' Janoris Jenkins and ran in for a touchdown.
"There was a lot of positives that were in the game," Harbaugh said. "Specifically with Colin, especially after the fumble-touchdown, the way he responded, the way our team responded -- again, putting ourselves in a position to win after that -- and, the same could be said after the safety, too.
Harbaugh also said former start Alex Smith is still in the picture.
"Alex is not out of this," he said. "We feel like Alex is -- we've said it before -- he's one of our guys, he's won us a lot of football games, and he'll be preparing himself to play in each of these games every single week. I mean that's what his mind-set has to be, as if he was the starting quarterback."
The 49ers host the Miami Dolphins this Sunday.
