The Jonesville Comet baseball and softball teams won weekend tournaments on the road. The Comet baseball team won games against White Pigeon 26-0 and against Cassopolis 13-4 to win the tournament. The Comet softball team won 12 against their first opponent and 4-3 against Mendon in their other game. Both teams have managed to keep adding to their positive overall records this May, and it could continue in week seven of the spring sports season.

For the softball team, pitcher Bryn Rusk earned the win in the 12-2 victory. The Comet threw four strikeouts and gave up just three hits and two runs. Lyra Nichols closed the game out with five strikeouts over two innings. Lyra Nichols and Elena Prater each had triple-base hits. Rusk, Abby Gutowski, Gracen Hager, Alexis Trine, Kierstyn Keller and Brooke Owen all recorded stolen bases. Rusk and Gutowski led their team with two each.

The team had a total of 16 hits and 10 RBI. Keller had two hits and two runs. Gutowski had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Owen had two hits, two runs and four RBI. Nichols had one hit and two RBI. Trine had one hit and one run. Prater had two hits, one run and one RBI. Hager had two hits and one RBI. Megan Hewlett had one hit and one run. Rusk had three hits and three runs.

Game two was a lot closer for the Comets. Jonesville scored four runs early on to stay ahead of Mendon. Mendon could not rally later in the game. Nichols earned the win with nine strikeouts over five innings. Nichols gave up four hits and three runs (one earned). Keller and Rusk led the team with two steals. Hager and Hewlett each had one stolen base.

Keller scored one run. Gutowski had one hit and two RBI. Owen had one hit and one run. Nichols had one hit. Trine had two hits and one RBI. Hager had one hit and one run. Hewlett had one run. Rusk had one hit.

For the baseball team, their 26-0 win over White Pigeon ended after just three innings. The Comets scored 10 in the first and eight in each of innings two and three. Drew Bradley and Devan Herendeen each had a triple-base hit. Bradley Wright and Tyler Scholfield each had double-base hits. Wright, AJ Bowers and Scholfield each had a stolen base.

Bradley had one hit, two runs and two RBI. Ethan Hammer had one hit, one run and two RBI. Wright had two hits, five runs and three RBI. Scholfield had three hits, three runs and three RBI. Jaxson Phifer had two hits, three runs and four RBI. Wade Sommers had two hits, two runs and two RBI. Damon Newell had two runs and one RBI. Herendeen had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Ayden Males had one hit, two runs and one RBI. Connor Vanbuskirk had two hits, two runs and one RBI. Bowers had one hit and two runs.

In their 13-4 win over Cassopolis, The Comets only led by one run, up 5-4, before the top of the sixth inning. Jonesville then scored eight runs to shut down the Rangers of Cassopolis. Herendeen had a technical no-hitter through three innings, earning six strikeouts. Ethan Hammer and Drew Bradley came in for relief pitching duties. Hamer gave up three runs. Bradley struck out one and gave up one run.

Vanbuskirk and Bradley had triple-base hits. Scholfield led the team with two steals. Herendeen, Wright, Sommers and Hammer had a stolen base. Bradley had three hits, two runs and one RBI. Wright had one hit, one run and one RBI. Scholfield had three hits, three runs and three RBI to match his first game totals. Phifer had one run and an RBI. Sommers had two hits, one run and three RBI. Vanbuskirk had one hit, one run and two RBI. Herendeen had one hit and one run. Hammer had one run. Bowers had a hit and a run.

The Comets are back at home on Tuesday, May 23 for doubleheaders against current (and future Cascade) league rival Homer. Games start around 4:00 p.m.
