John Marshall's Abi Tri claims Section 1, Class 3A title; Mayo's Ryan Gwaltney places second

Oct. 26—OWATONNA — John Marshall freshman Abigail Tri captured the Section 1, Class 3A girls cross country championship on Thursday at Brooktree Golf Course.

With a time of 18 minutes, 48.7 seconds, Tri earned a trip to her second state meet. She made it to the Class 2A state meet as a seventh-grader.

This one means a lot for Tri, who didn't run the same race last year as she battled through performance anxiety.

Century junior Sophia Comfere finished third (19:26.6), her teammate and senior Addy Crow finished sixth (19:46.2), and John Marshall senior Ryana Mathis finished ninth (20:32.2) to become state-meet qualifiers as well.

Farmington won the team title 40 points, followed by Owatonna with 80 points, Lakeville South (84), Century (87) and New Prague (126).

John Marshall finished sixth with 149 points. Mayo finished eighth with 165. Senior Willemijn Leiner finished 12th to lead the Spartans.

The top two teams qualify for team state, while the top six individuals not on the state-qualifying also qualify for state, which is set for Saturday, Nov. 4, at Les Bolstad Golf Course on the University of Minnesota campus.

On the boys side, Mayo's Ryan Gwaltney finished as the section runner-up with a time of 16:26.0. Lakeville North senior Chase Altergott won the meet (16:17.6).

It is the second straight year Gwaltney finished second and it's the third year in a row he has qualified for state. He will be joined by teammate Lucas Olson. The Spartans' senior placed sixth (16:52.1) to earn his first trip to the state meet.

The Spartans finished third as a team with 97 points. Lakeville North won the team title with 54 points, just beating rival South, which had 55 points.

John Marshall finished sixth with 114 points and Century finished eighth with 214 points.
