Jimmies men's hockey win over Midland, wrestling teams compete

Nov. 12—JAMESTOWN — The University of Jamestown men's hockey team had their backs against the wall with their captain ejected and down by two goals and still managed to get the 3-2 shootout win over Midland University on Saturday, Nov. 11, at John L. Wilson Arena.

Late in the first period, the Warriors (7-9, 7-6) scored to make it 1-0. Midway through the third, the Jimmies' Greg Susinski clobbered a Warrior behind their net and was promptly ejected for a hit to the head. The Jimmies (10-5, 9-1) were able to kill off the penalty but the Warriors appeared to be on a mission as with 2:53 to go in the game, Zach Weber skated in front and sniped one home to push his teams lead out to 2-0.

However, just over a minute after the Warriors scored, they got called for a tripping penalty giving the Jimmies new life. It didn't take long for the Jimmies to take advantage as approximately 20 seconds into the advantage the Jimmies' Logan Berggreen scored to cut the deficit to 2-1 and cause the Jimmies women's hockey players in attendance to explode with excitement. 15 seconds later, Berggren jammed home a loose puck to tie the game up at two.

Despite both teams having six shots on goal in overtime, neither team was able to break the deadlock, sending the game to a shootout. After both team's initial shooters were stuffed, Jimmies head coach Dean Stork called upon Brad Fortin who sniped one home to put the Jimmies up 1-0 in the shootout. After both team's next shooters missed, it all came down to the Warriors' Andrew Larsen versus the Jimmies goalie Brandon Weare, and Weare was up to the task, slamming the door shut to give his team the dramatic win.

The Jimmies are back in action at 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, when they go to the University of Central Oklahoma.
