Jim Costa to replace Mike Stone on 97.1 The Ticket morning show

Jim Costa will replace Mike Stone as the newest Detroit sports radio staple as a morning host for WXYT-FM (97.1) the radio station announced Thursday.

Costa has worked at "The Ticket" for two years as a fill-in host for day and weekend shifts. He is the current host for the Detroit Lions radio broadcast as well. Costa will host the show with former Michigan football and Lions offensive lineman Jon Jansen, weekdays from 6-10 a.m.

He will replace Stone, who announced in August he will retire at the end of the NFL season. "Stoney" turns 65 in December and has worked the last 14 years at WXYT, co-hosting the morning show, first with Bill McAllister and then with Jamie Samuelsen. He was the afternoon drive-time host on WDFN-AM, first with Rob Parker and then with current Detroit News columnist Bob Wojnowski from 1994-2009.

Stone, a Philadelphia native, came to Detroit in the mid 80s as a sports producer for WDIV-TV. His radio career in Detroit started in 1988 on WLLZ-FM (98.7) on "The Sunday Sports Albom" with Free Press columnist Mitch Albom.

Costa previously worked for WDFN-AM from 2015-20 in Grand Rapids as a drive-time sports radio host. He was the program director from 2018 to 2020 as well, before moving to WXYT and Detroit. Costa got his start at Central Michigan and interned at WXYT while in school.
