Jets, safety Jamal Adams agree on rookie contract

On the cusp of training camp opening across the NFL, the New York Jets have finally signed their 2017 first-round pick. According to reports, the Jets and Jamal Adams agreed to a four-year deal worth $22.3 Million, with a $14.3 million signing bonus.

The Jets drafted Adams with the sixth overall pick in this year’s draft with the hopes that he will immediately step in the fill the position after the departure of Calvin Pryor. Adams spent three years at LSU before entering the draft. During his time in Louisiana, Adams accumulated 209 total tackles, two sacks, and five interceptions.

Adams is clearly the future of the defense and the Jets themselves. This offseason saw a purge of veteran talent from the roster this offseason. This included David Harris, Brandon Marshall, Eric Decker, and Darelle Revis. The moves have many pundits believing that the Jets are in full-on tank mode as they look to pick first or second in next year’s draft.

The one bright spot coming into this season is Adams. In order to become moderately successful, the Jets need to form an identity as a team through this rebuild. The previous identity began to erode towards the end of the Rex Ryan era and never recovered. Adams can and must be the future for the Jets.
