With Jaylen Waddle out due to concussion protocol, Dolphins elevate Robbie Chosen for Broncos game

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle was ruled out Saturday for Sunday’s home opener against the Denver Broncos due to being in the concussion protocol.

The Dolphins elevated fellow wideout Robbie Chosen from the practice squad to the active roster for the game.

Waddle was listed as questionable on Friday’s injury report, but without sufficient progress in protocol, was downgraded to out Saturday.

He took a helmet-to-helmet hit from Patriots linebacker/safety Marte Mapu in last Sunday night’s 24-17 win over New England. Mapu was fined $5,620 Saturday for his unnecessary roughness penalty.

After missing Wednesday and Thursday practices during the past week, Waddle progressed to the point of limited practice participation Friday before being labeled questionable then. The progress thus far, however, is encouraging for Waddle’s prospects to play the Dolphins’ Week 4 AFC East showdown with the Buffalo Bills.

Chosen is a capable and experienced receiver with 375 career receptions for 4,956 yards and 29 touchdowns. He is a speedster with a long, 6-foot-3 frame.

Formerly known as Robby Anderson, Robbie Anderson and Chosen Anderson, Chosen signed with his hometown Dolphins in April. He did not make Miami’s initial 53-man regular-season roster but was brought back for a spot on the team’s practice squad. Chosen is a South Plantation High alum who has previously played for the New York Jets, Carolina Panthers and Arizona Cardinals.

With Waddle out, aside from more opportunities for Tyreek Hill, the Dolphins also have options of more targets for fellow receivers Braxton Berrios, River Cracraft and Erik Ezukanma. They can also make Cedrick Wilson Jr., who has been a healthy inactive the first two weeks, active Sunday.

Miami also elevated outside linebacker Cameron Goode, as the team did for wins in Weeks 1 and 2. Goode is a core special teams contributor.

Teams are allowed three free elevations for players from the practice squad. The Dolphins have now used all three they can on Goode, the 2022 seventh-round pick who was also on the practice squad last season.

If Miami wants him brought back up for another regular-season game, it will have to sign him to the active roster.

The Dolphins enter Sunday with running back Salvon Ahmed (groin) doubtful and six others questionable: Tackle Terron Armstead (ankle, knee, back), outside linebacker Jaelan Phillips (back), defensive tackle Raekwon Davis (wrist), defensive back Elijah Campbell (knee) and tight ends Tyler Kroft (back) and Julian Hill (ankle).
