Jarome Iginla will get his retirement party in Calgary.

The Calgary Flames confirmed that they will hold a retirement press conference on July 30 for one of the greatest power forwards and lethal snipers of his generation — and the franchise’s former captain — to celebrate his 16-year run with the organization.

Iginla did not play at a competitive level last season but ostensibly chose to keep options open in lieu of retirement. He did not, however, sign on with an NHL team or garner a spot on Canada’s Olympic team in a year where NHL players were barred from the competition.

Drafted 11th overall by the Dallas Stars in 1995, Iginla was soon dealt to Calgary in a deal involving Joe Nieuwendyk. Two 50-goal seasons helped him reach 525 for his career in Calgary and saw him win an Art Ross Trophy and two Rocket Richards. He added another 100 goals in stops in Pittsburgh, Boston, Colorado and Los Angeles, finishing his career with 625 goals and 1300 points in 1554 games.

With 22 points, Iginla led the Flames to within a goal of winning the Stanley Cup in 2004 before falling in a Game 7 to the Tampa Bay Lightning. Unable to reach that level again in his time with the Flames, Iginla spent several seasons in the twilight of his career chasing a championship, only to come up short.

Iginla won two Olympic gold medals, a World Championship, a World Cup and World Junior gold in his decorated international career for Canada. The future Hall of Famer had a hand in one of the most iconic moments in Canadian sports history, claiming the primary assist on Sidney Crosby’s golden goal in the 2010 Olympic Final in Vancouver versus the United States.

He will be rightfully celebrated on July 30, and soon have his No. 12 hanging from the Saddledome rafters.
