Eagles QB Jalen Hurts went to hospital for abdominal pain, 'is fine now,' says Nick Sirianni

Jalen Hurts was expected to start in the Philadelphia Eagles' preseason game against New England Patriots on Thursday.

When Joe Flacco took the field with the Eagles starters on their first drive, even the broadcasters were caught off guard. The Eagles addressed the issue shortly after kickoff, announcing that Hurts was ruled out of the game due to "illness."

The Eagles didn't initially clarify what the illness was, leading to speculation over what sidelined their quarterback, who looked fine while taking the field during pregame warmups. They later clarified Hurts didn't have COVID-19.

Hurts went to hospital after pregame warmups

After the game, head coach Nick Sirriani told reporters that Hurts went to a hospital with abdominal pain, but "is fine now."

"He wasn't feeling great when he came in," Sirianni said. "So we put him through pregame warmups. He wanted to go out there and go through pregame warmups. He came back in, he still wasn't feeling good. And we evaluated him.

"We just decided that it wasn't in his best interest to play with what he was feeling. He's fine now. He's doing OK now."

When pressed for details, Sirianni revealed that Hurts went to a local hospital during the game.

"He actually went to the hospital to get evaluated for his stomach," Sirianni continued. "He came back, everything's good. He's going to be OK.

"He had pain in his abdomen. For a guy like that to tell us — he's a tough guy — it must have been hurting him pretty good."

He later described Hurts' condition as a "stomach infection."

Hurts looked well during warmups

Questions remained during the game, considering that Hurts participated in pregame warmups and showed no outward signs of feeling unwell. Here he was dancing to music playing over the public-address system.

Here he was running some pregame drills with teammates. And, again — dancing.

Here's hoping for Hurts' sake that his stomach issue doesn't sideline him for too long.

The Eagles lost Thursday's game, 35-0. They have one preseason game remaining before their regular-season opener at the Atlanta Falcons on Sept. 12.
