Jacksonville Jaguars fans will get one preseason look at the team before it opens the 2023 season.

The Jags announced their preseason schedule Wednesday and for the second time in three seasons, only one of the games will be at home — which will be the case in the years the team gets nine home games in the current 17-game scheduling format.

The Jaguars open the preseason Aug. 12 at Dallas, their second trip to AT&T Stadium in three years, at 5 p.m. (FOX). They will travel to Detroit on Aug. 19 to face the Lions at Ford Field ( 1 p.m., FOX), then play their only preseason home game against Miami on Aug. 26 at TIAA Bank Field (7 p.m., CBS).

The Jaguars also will hold joint practices with the Lions the week of that game.

Having the final preseason game at home means Jaguars fans will likely have to wait until the regular season home opener on Sept. 17 against Kansas City to get their first in-person look at the team's stars such as quarterback Trevor Lawrence, wide receivers Calvin Ridley, Zay Jones and Christian Kirk and running back Travis Etienne.

NFL coaches frequently bench their first-team players in the final preseason game to avoid injury and instead use the game to evaluate the back end of their roster ahead of the final cut date.

But the Dolphins game will still carry significance since there will only be one cut in the preseason, on Aug. 29.

More Saturday games

All three games will be on Saturdays but the Jaguars should be used to that by now: they played their last three games of the 2022 season on Saturday, beating Tennessee 20-16 on Jan. 7 to clinch the AFC South, rallying over the Los Angeles Chargers 31-30 on Jan. 14 in the first round of the playoffs, then losing to Kansas City 27-20 on Jan. 21, coming one game short of the AFC Championship.

The Jaguars are 3-3 in preseason games against Dallas, 0-3 against Detroit and 4-7 against Miami. They last played the Cowboys in 2021, winning the final game of that preseason 34-14. Trevor Lawrence was almost perfect, completing 11 of 12 passes for 139 yards but to show how much roster upheaval since then, none of the players who either had a carry from scrimmage or caught a pass are on this year's preseason roster.

The Jaguars last played Miami in the preseason in 2019, losing 22-7 at Hard Rock Stadium. Their last preseason game against the Lions was a 22-17 loss at home in 2015.

Preseason records mean little

The Jaguars are 1-10 in preseason games since 2019 and were 0-4 last season. But preseason records rarely matter to the regular season. The last time the Jaguars had a winning record in August was 2018 when they were 3-1. They followed that with a 5-11 record.

The combined preseason record in their last two playoff seasons, 2017 and last year, is 2-6.

The Jaguars are 53-51 in preseason games in the franchise's history.
