Jaguars camp report: Another hot day gets feisty during short-yardage, goal line drills

The Jacksonville Jaguars practiced for a third day in a row in full pads and high temperatures at the Miller Electric Center on Monday.

Predictably, some of the players got on each other's last nerve.

The most extreme extracurricular incident of camp came during a period when offensive and defensive linemen went against each other in a pass rush/pass protection drill.

Free-agent rookie lineside linebacker D.J. Coleman went against third-year offensive guard Blake Hance, and the rep appeared to be at a standoff when Coleman began throwing punches.

Jaguars offensive line coach Phil Rauscher threw Coleman out of the drill and a few minutes later, veteran tackle Roy Robertson-Harris was seen talking to Coleman.

Earlier in practice, on the second play of a period for short-yardage situations, tight end Brenton Strange was dragged down after catching a pass from Trevor Lawrence. Linebacker Foye Oluokun and safety Rayshawn Jenkins appeared to hit Strange late on the play, precipitating a brief scrum among players on both sides that was quickly quelled.

Practice notebook

Weather: Sunny, 82 degrees to start, 89 degrees at the finish.

Duration: Two hours, 35 minutes, full pads.

Injuries: None reported. Wide receiver Jamal Agnew had the wind knocked out of him on one play but was fine; LB Willie Taylor III spent much of practice on an exercise bike. Cornerback Tyson Campbell (concussion protocol) did not practice and offensive guard Tyler Shatley (afib incident last week) participate only in individual drills.

Linemen do battle

Jaguars had several standouts during the one-on-one period between the offensive and defensive lines.

One of them was rookie defensive lineman Tyler Lacy, who got past guard Cooper Hodges twice during the one-on-one period.

Also standing out were Robertson-Harris and DaVon Hamilton. Robertson-Harris had a good move against Blake Hance and took Walker Little to the ground on another rep.

Third-year outside linebacker K'Lavon Chaisson had a tough day on at least two occasions, getting pancaked by rookie right tackle Anton Harrison and stopped by veteran tackle Cam Robinson.

Though Harrison fared well against Chaisson, he got beat by second-year outside linebacker Travon Walker during the one-on-one period. Harrison is making his way back from a right shoulder injury.

Overall, the offensive linemen appeared to win the majority of the reps against depth players on the defensive line.

Offense notes

  • Rookie running back Tank Bigsby continued to show a burst and raced 70 yards for a touchdown during one 11-on-11 period. One a period in which the offense began at its one 1-yard line he hit a hole for an 11-yard gain.

  • The offense scored six touchdowns during one stretch of plays on the goal line, with Travis Etienne scoring two touchdowns. C.J. Beathard threw TD passes to JaMycal Hasty and Gerrit Prince.

  • Lawrence was 5 of 7 in 7-on-7 periods and 3 of 5 in 11-on-11, on a day when short-yardage plays and runs comprised the bulk of the workload.

  • On a deep pass from Lawrence to Christian Kirk in a 7-on-7 drill, Jags wide receivers coach Chad Hall began yelling, "yes ... yes ... yes!" just as Kirk was coming out of his break. Hall knew what was coming because Kirk left safety Andrew Wingard two steps behind and caught the ball easily.

Defense notes

  • Rookie defensive tackle Raymond Vohasek, a seventh-round pick, had his best day of training camp. He broke through and nailed Kendric Pryor for a loss on a short-yardage play and on a play from the offense's 1-yard line, he broke through and tackled Snoop Conner for a safety.

  • Adam Gotsis had another safety on a play from the 1, nailing Hasty.

  • Linebacker De'Shaan Dixon belted D'Ernest Johnson for a 2-yard loss.

  • Parker Washington caught a pass and bobbled it right in the hands of cornerback Erick Hallett II. It could have been ruled an interception or a fumble recovery but either way, it was the third turnover Hallett has snagged in camp.

  • Cornerbacks Darious Williams and Chris Claybrooks intercepted Lawrence in 1-on-1 receiver drills.

  • Linebacker Caleb Johnson recovered a fumble after Elijah Cooks fumbled a pass reception.

Special teams notes

  • Punter Logan Cooke had nine of 11 attempts either fair-caught, downed or bounce dead inside the opposition's 10-yard line. Antonio Johnson and Tim Jones downed punts at the 1 and Pryor downed another at the 2.

  • During a period in which Cooke punted from his own end zone, with the line of scrimmage at the 1, he hit kicks of 69 and 57 yards.
