Jacksonville State football RB Ron Wiggins enters portal, second major player to do this spring

Another major piece of the Jacksonville State roster has announced their intention to enter the transfer portal.

On Tuesday night Ron Wiggins, one of two running's back that seemed likely to take a majority of the carries announced his intention to enter the transfer portal on April 15. He joined safety Larry Worth who announced the same thing on Monday night.

"First and foremost, I would like to thank the man above for giving me the ability to play the game that I love. I want to give a huge shoutout to coach grass, coach rich rod, and their staff for taking me in with open arms, and developing me into the player I am today. I will forever be grateful for my time at Jacksonville state university. Jacksonville will always hold a special place in my heart. The bonds i have built over the years with my brothers will last a lifetime. With that being said, I will be entering the transfer portal on April 15th with one year of eligibility left," Wiggins posted in a statement.

Wiggins was a redshirt senior out of Jacksonville High, making him a hometown kid who helped bring the Gamecocks to the FBS level. He ran for 468 yards last year, including a season high 126 yards and a touchdown in the bowl game. He scored six times last year.

For his career, he had ran for 1,183 yards and 12 scored with 24 catches for 218 yards and a touchdown.

It leaves Anwar Lewis as the lead back, after Malik Jackson declared for the NFL draft in January. Lewis is also a redshirt-senior who has ran for 1,270 yards over two years at Jax State, with 11 scores. He ran for 452 yards and three scores in a crowded backfield last year. He came to the Gamecocks from Hutchinson Community College.
