Jack Gohlke gets one more night to shine in college skills competition

Pewaukee native Jack Gohlke, who led Oakland past Kentucky in the first round of the NCAA Tournament, had one more night to shine before the end of the 2024 Big Dance.

Competing in the State Farm College Slam Dunk and 3-Point Championships at Global Credit Union Arena in Phoenix, Gohlke's team won the "Hot Shot Challenge," and the Oakland University senior also got a chance to compete in the more traditional three-point contest.

The event has become an annual showcase in advance of the Final Four, which begins for the women Friday and the men Saturday.

Gohlke's 16 points in the first round of the three-point competition weren't good enough to advance, with the cutoff at 19. Keisei Tominaga of Nebraska eventually won the event.

But Gohlke still had another fun moment to shine, when he teamed with Marlow Gilmore Jr. of Francis Marion University and Unique Drake of the St. John's University women's team in the Hot Shot Challenge; the trio hit all seven of their shots, including a half-court shot by Gilmore.

That was easily enough to win the event.

UW-Milwaukee's Langston Wilson competed in the dunk competition and recorded a score of 51 in the first round, also not good enough to advance, shy by two points.

The team that defeated Gohlke's Golden Grizzlies in overtime, North Carolina State, will play in the national semifinal on Saturday against Purdue.
