IU men's soccer knocks off No. 7 Virginia on road, headed back to Elite Eight

Indiana's tour through ACC country continued with a 1-0 win over No. 7 Virginia in the Sweet 16 of the NCAA men's soccer tournament.

The Hoosiers upset No. 10 Wake Forest on the road last week, and pulled off another surprise Sunday, knocking off the host Cavaliers in Charlottesville.

The win marks a third trip to national quarterfinals in the past four seasons and fifth in seven seasons for the Hoosiers. IU (15-4-4) will play No. 2 Notre Dame in South Bend next weekend and is one win away from a record 23rd College Cup appearance. The Fighting Irish survived Western Michigan in penalty kicks on Sunday night.

IU opened the scoring in the 11th minute when senior Maouloune Goumballe drove in off the left wing and squared a cross into the box, which freshman forward Collins Oduro calmly turned in for an early Hoosiers lead.

Sam Sarver nearly doubled IU's lead with 34 minutes left on a lightning-quick individual counterattack, but his shot whistled just wide.

Defender Jansen Miller preserved IU's lead as he cleared a goal-bound shot with 27 minutes remaining as goalkeeper JT Harms collided with Virginia striker Stephen Annor at the top of the box. Seven minutes later, Miller cleared another shot on the goal-line from Annor.

Virginia had claims for a last-second hand ball at the top of the box, but the referee denied those hopes and the Hoosiers' defense remained resolute.

This was a meeting of two of college soccer's most successful programs: IU has eight national titles, Virginia has seven. The Cavaliers (11-4-4) hadn't lost since Sept. 22 and suffered just their second home defeat of the season.

What started as an uneven season has now kicked into gear and become what IU fans have come to expect from this program. The Hoosiers have won eight straight games and 12 of their past 13.
