Irondequoit adjusts after injury for bounce-back win: Section V's top games from Thursday

Not long after Irondequoit's first offensive series, the Eagles had to go to a back-up plan for moving the football.

Sticking with the team's running game worked Thursday night, leading to a 24-6 win in Section V Class A for the Eagles over Webster Thomas.

"We are pretty balanced," Irondequoit coach Dan Fichter said while praising the team's players for adjusting. "Tonight, we had to run the ball. It was forced fed early when you’re quarterback gets hurt."

Eagles quarterback Taiden Makubire left the game with an injury that Fichter neither shared or elaborated on. Steven Clinkscales replaced Makubire, adding to Irondequoit's rushing attack with quarterback keepers around the edges of the Webster Thomas defense.

Irondequoit scored all of its points in the first half. Using a group of players to carry the ball while pushing downfield out of tight formations, the Eagles finished with 243 rushing yards.

Jordan Nolan had two rushing touchdowns and Cameron Freeman finished with 105 yards on 21 carries for the Eagles (5-1 overall record). Irondequoit, playing on its homefield, bounced back from its first loss of the season last week, 21-20 in overtime at Victor.

Irondequoit took control after the Eagles and Webster Thomas put together good opening drives. The Eagles got a 23-yard field goal by Samuel Hittepole. Webster Thomas went from its 26-yard line to the Irondequoit 2, when the Titans lined up as if to kick a field goal.

When the ball was snapped, Thomas quarterback Levi Kulik sent a shovel pass or pitch ahead but the ball ended up skipping into the hands of Cameron Miller at the Irondequoit 1. Miller ran the interception down along his team's sideline for a 99-yard touchdown.
