Iowa State's T.J. Tampa named to Preseason All-Big 12 football team

Iowa State defensive back T.J. Tampa is expected to follow up his breakout season in 2022 with another big campaign in 2023.

Tampa, a senior for the Cyclones, was named to the Preseason All-Big 12 football team Wednesday. The selections are made by media members who cover the league.

The St. Petersburg, Fla., native was an easy choice after coming off his best collegiate season. Tampa started all 12 games for Iowa State last season and ranked sixth on the team with 40 total tackles, including five for a loss.

Tampa also came up with some big plays in some crucial moments. During Iowa State’s loss at Oklahoma State, Tampa tallied his first career interception and racked up a team-high nine pass breakups, which tied for fourth-most in the Big 12. He also delivered a forced fumble at the goal line in Iowa State’s victory over Iowa.

Kansas, Kansas State, Texas and TCU led the league with four selections apiece.
