Iowa State wrestling wins 43-3 over Cleveland State in David Carr's homecoming

In David Carr's hometown, Iowa State wrestling thrashed Cleveland State for a 43-3 road victory to open the season.

Carr's 165-pound bout was the last one on Sunday's bout sheet. The dual began with MJ Gaitan at 174 pounds to give Carr his shining moment at home.

Just 1:30 into his match with Daniel Patten, Carr used his strength to push his opponent onto his back for a pin, headlining a special day for the Massillon, Ohio, native.

Iowa State finished the day with six technical falls, two major decisions and a pin.

Among the notable results was Nando Villaescusa. He got the nod instead of projected starter Julien Broderson, then pulled an upset over sixth-year senior Ben Smith, winning by major decision 16-8. Smith is ranked No. 24 nationally.

In his first match since moving up to heavyweight, Yonger Bastida wrestled a much bigger Daniel Bucknavich. Outside of trailing 3-0 early from a quick takedown, Bastida dominated the match to win 27-10 by technical fall. Bastida looked explosive, with eight takedowns on his opponent, appearing more than capable of being a really good wrestler at that weight.

The Frost twins made their way into the lineup with Evan Frost winning by major decision in his dual debut with four takedowns in the third period over Jake Manley. Evan's brother, Jacob, did not have the same luck. Dylan Layton had two near-falls to win by a 20-18 football score over Jacob Frost.
