Iowa rival captures FCS Passing leader in transfer portal

A major Big Ten rival of the Iowa Hawkeyes gained a valuable addition through the transfer portal. On Sunday, it was announced that New Hampshire quarterback Max Brosmer committed to play at Minnesota next year. This year’s FCS passing leader joins the Gophers as a grad transfer with a year left of eligibility.

Brosmer announced his decision on social media, thanking at length his entire University of New Hampshire family for their support over the years before declaring his decision.

“After talking with my family, I have decided to commit to The University of Minnesota. I want to thank the entire Gopher coaching staff and team for welcoming me into their program. Let’s rock!” Brosmer wrote in his announcement on social media.

In Brosmer, the Gophers are receiving the top passer at the FCS level this season. Through 11 games, the Rosswell, Ga., native threw for 3,449 passing yards and 29 touchdowns. He was only intercepted five times. He also rushed for five touchdowns.

Though playing at the FCS level, Brosmer has been working with one of the top quarterback coaches in the country in Quincy Avery. You may know Avery from his work with Jalen Hurts and Deshaun Watson. Avery endorsed his student’s skills on social media, stating that he was the “most talented passer in the portal.”

Minnesota desperately needs a quarterback of that level. It’s been a struggle at the position since Tanner Morgan’s lone big season back in 2019. The Gophers were abysmal through the air in 2023, averaging only 153.2 passing yards per game.

With Athan Kaliakmanis’ entrance to the transfer portal, Brosmer has a clear path at the starting job in 2024. There will surely be an adjustment from Colonial Athletic Association to the Big Ten, but if Brosmer is able to maintain his high level of play, the Golden Gophers may be a team to keep an eye on.
