Instant analysis of Baker Mayfield’s new 3-year contract with Bucs

Baker Mayfield is gonna be the starting quarterback for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers for a bit longer, as the former No. 1 overall pick has agreed to a new three-year contract extension that will keep him in a Bucs uniform for the foreseeable future.

The deal is reportedly worth $100 million with $50 million guaranteed, and another $15 million in potential incentives that Mayfield can earn over the three-year period.

Considering the massive jump in this year’s salary cap, and what the going rate is for a quality starting quarterback in today’s NFL, those numbers are a solid get for the Bucs, who don’t have to worry about the game’s most important position now.

Mayfield enjoyed the best season of his career last year while playing on a one-year, “prove it” deal with the Bucs, and prove it he certainly did. In return for his impressive 2023 campaign, he’s getting a massive and well-deserved raise, and will finally get to enjoy the stability of staying with a quality franchise like the Bucs, and a team that will once again be expected to contend for a fourth straight NFC South title.

This deal is a massive win/win for all parties involved, as the Bucs lock in another key piece of last year’s overachieving team, while Mayfield gets the massive pay day he earned with his Pro Bowl season last year.

Now, the Bucs can focus on keeping other key pieces, such as linebacker Lavonte David and kicker Chase McLaughlin, while also working on new long-term deals for safety Antoine Winfield Jr. (who got the franchise tag this year) and left tackle Tristan Wirfs.
