Indiana women's basketball adds transfer Sharnecce Currie-Jelks, OVC Freshman of the Year

IU women's basketball landed UT Martin transfer Sharnecce Currie-Jelks, the program announced Tuesday.

Last season, the 6-2 forward was named Ohio Valley Conference Freshman of the Year, while also being tabbed on the All-OVC first team. She averaged 15.2 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.4 steals and 1.0 block per game while shooting 53.9% from the field. Last season, she attempted 21 3-pointers, making five of them.

Currie-Jelks, who has three years of eligibility remaining, gives Indiana more frontcourt depth. Alyssa Geary exhausted her college eligibility, while Mona Zaric and Kiandra Browne transferred out of the program, though each of those three played relatively limited roles for IU last season.

Indiana already has some firepower in the paint. Star Mackenzie Holmes, who averaged 22.3 points and 7.3 rebounds per game last season, is returning. There's also Lilly Meister, who showed a lot of promise as a freshman last season.

There are high expectations as the Hoosiers continue to move toward the start of the 2023-24 season. They're coming off a remarkable season, in which they won the outright Big Ten regular season title and earned a No. 1 seed in the NCAA tournament. That magical run, though, came to a sour end when they were beaten by Miami (Fla.) at Assembly Hall in the second round.

IU will have to navigate life without Grace Berger, who has since moved on to the Indiana Fever. But IU has many pieces in place to help fill in that lost production. Sydney Parrish, Sara Scalia, Chloe Moore-McNeil and Yarden Garzon are returning after playing key roles for the Hoosiers last season.
