I'm Impressed By Joe Montana's Pick For the GOAT QB
Joe Montana ain't no schmuck. The man won four Super Bowls, threw for 40,551 yards, had 273 passing touchdowns, and now sits in the Hall of Fame. Of course, the man had Jerry Rice as his favorite target, but he had an all-time career nonetheless.
Now 67 years old, the man has attempted a new feat of bravery: weighing in on the GOAT debate. At his position, specifically. And Montana, who obviously knows a thing or two about gunslinging, crowned a man who is very much not named Tom Brady. Or Unitas and Manning. It's Dan Marino, the legendary Miami Dolphins QB. "He had a quick release. I had to step into a lot of things to get enough [force] on the ball," Montana told Men's Health. "He had the perfect torque of his upper body and strength to deliver the ball quickly at a fast release with accuracy."
“Put Marino into today’s game where he gets free release... and his receivers, holy cow, weren't very big," he continued. "Now these guys are 6'4," 6'5. I think [Marino] is probably one of the most unsung heroes of the game. People don't talk enough about him or realize the numbers that he put up during the times that he put them up."
Kudos to Montana for giving Marino—who criminally never won a Super Bowl—his due. Oh, and next potential GOAT? According to Montana, it's the one and only Patrick Mahomes. "The things he does and is able to do are so different than what any other quarterback does who's out there," he says. Sounds about right to us.
